best programmer for a $400-$500 budget?

I've had my 99 cummins 24v for almost 6 months now, and ever since i got it i've been wanting to light up the 5.9 :tu: I've been looking for the past couple weeks now at different programmer and chips, and there's alot of options out there. i'm wanting to max out at $500 dollars. i've really been looking at the hypertech max performance, superchip hyperpac, and the edge juice. anybody have any suggestions?

yeah avoid the edge juice, ran it for 2 years, had to replace the thing 3 times. also befor you start adding power, let me ask you this, have you done the basics like upgraded lift pump, exhaust and air intake? i reccomend looking at those first before buying any power adder other wise, you will kill you injection pump and be out several hundred to several thousand dollars.

Once you have the basics down, i reccomend TST powermax 3, ive ran most of the aftermarket programers and boxes out there, TST has out performed all of them.

man is it good to hear from somone that's actually had one of the products. But yeah i have a 4'' MBRP turbo back, and an air raid cold air intake. I haven't done the lift pump yet, but i was hopeing i could avoid that with a programmer that wasn't too big. Have you heard anything on Superchip, or Hypertech? i'm not looking for anything huge, just a little more under the pedal, preferably better mileage, and hopefully the ability to blow more coal:tu:

Id do an Edge Comp. But you need gauges first and a lift pump.

Your driving down a risky road if your looking to add power before a lift pump. Many, many injection pumps have been failed due to poor fuel supply.
Everyone has their opinions, and I don't think there is anything wrong with the Edge Juice with Attitude. Some just have bad luck with products. I co-worker laid down 643HP and 1268Ft. Lbs using a Juice with Attitude, so clearly they do the job well. The Comp box fuels harder, but doesn't have the display, alerts, and other features the EJWA does.
Personally, I wouldn't go for a HyperMax, or Superchips. If you looking for good reliable power, eventually you are going to pull one of those out, and put in something like we are talking about. No need to spend the money twice, eh?

it doesn't matter if you don't have a programmer your factory lift pump will leave you needed an injection pump and a lift pump. So save yourself and get a lift pump now, and then a programmer. I didn't see anything in your post about gauges so I would suggest a juice with attitude as it will give you all the gauges you need. I had great luck with my juice bought it back in 07 and it's still going strong in my dads truck. 4 years 0 issues. Or maybe even a quadzilla adrenaline with pulse you can find them used for under 500 but I didn't like the way it worked for me.

Love my Quadzilla Adrenaline W/PCM. It works excellent for my needs. You may try doing a price quote request on the quote thread for a package deal of a tuner and fuel pump. You may get lucky and get a combo for around a thousand bucks.

thanks alot guys, i just signed up for diesel bombers last night, and since then i've already learned more than i have about programmers in the last 6 months..... definately alot to take into consideration. I just found out the lift pump on my truck got replaced a month before i got it, so i'ts been about 7 months. I'm not opposed to getting a used programmer, i just haven't had much luck finding anything. anyone have some suggestions?

I has a Edge Juice with Attitude that I am going to sell. It is the old school monitor, but still has all the power. Send me a private message if you would like to know more.

your still not getting it a factory lift pump new is not enough to keep a vp happy with just a mild programmer. I had a 99 with a 3 month old lift pump and injection pump and with an edge comp on 3 I could pull it down to 5psi not good. They just can't keep up. put a fass or airdog on first then get gauges they will save you $$$$$$$

RAW 01-18-2011 06:33 PM

He has an excellent point. Supplied fuel is more critical then delivered fuel.:tu:

chad83181 01-18-2011 07:22 PM

Id be listening get a FASS or Airdog on it first along with a FPG fuel pressure guage, do that just to see the difference the lift pump alone makes to a stock truck, you'll be surprised, that is if your vp44 is still healthy, you will see what i'm talking about.:c:

DieselWeasel 01-18-2011 08:27 PM

Oh i just read the factory lift pump thing! Get a pump first! They are POS's if that thing fails you will have a 1500-2000$ mistake on your hands!

Cummins Smoke 24v 01-19-2011 07:22 AM

Like everybody says get a better fuel system it highly recommended I'm running the airdog and i never drop bellow 16psi of fuel pressure. But programmer/chip wise I'm running a Superchips, smoke is decent but I'm looking for more power that's why I bought 150 horse injectors. As far as hypertech goes I hear there junk that's other peoples opinion. The edge I hear is a good chip rolls the coal and good hp,that will be the next thing I install after my turbo.. But right now get a better fuel system like a fass or airdog. It will help you out in the long run and you won't be disappointed. Hope this helps!:c:

I have been very happy with my EJWA. I bought it off the local classifieds, but it was new in the box. Be careful when you buy a used one that you get all the pieces. I looked at a few of them that were missing certain parts of the programmer package. For me, it was basically money I was going to spend on gauges anyways and this gave me a smaller package for the dash with a free chip so to speak.

By the way it was listed at $650 and I apologetically offered $450 and the guy agreed. I spent a couple of months looking hard to find that price in my area.

RAW 01-19-2011 02:31 PM

I ran into the pieces issue recently as well. I bought a used EJWA CTS, and the harness was hacked out of the truck. It didn't come with a fuel pressure sensor, trans temp sensor, or a pyro. I like using PayPal for issues just like the one I have now. The one I have has everything, even stickers!!!

tburke 01-19-2011 03:38 PM

I'm another one to recommend getting a fuel pressure gauge ASAP, i doubt very much your fuel pressure is where it should be if the replacement pump is stock. I've been running my EJWA for a little over 2 years, bought it refurbished off ebay for $320 and have not had a single problem with it....not sure if any are listed there now though. I went that route because I had no gauges and buying th EJWA or another programmer with gauges kills 2 birds with 1 stone....IMO, Raptor, Air Dog, or FASS to solve low fuel pressure issue. Good Luck:tu:

Cummins Smoke 24v 01-20-2011 08:27 AM

yep... My buddie also has a Edge Juice and he still hasent upgraded his fuel pump and when he is getting on the freeway that alarm goes off cause his truck is a 2-3psi of fuel pressure. I hope he doesent ruin his VP!:argh:

He will learn the hard way.:ouch:

and to top it all off he has a smoke switch :ouch:

tburke 01-20-2011 09:53 AM

Just a matter of time...another VP44 bites the dust:td: He should leave it on stock setting, keep his foot out of it and get a good lift pump before it's too late. When I bought my truck first thing that went out was VP44 replaced it with a kit that came with carter lift pump:td: and low pressure warning light. Truck was stock and the warning light would go off any time I put my foot in it. Gauges, Raptors, Air Dogs and FASS:rocking:

physcoman1991 12-12-2012 07:33 PM

Im new to diesels can anyone tell me what lift pump i should run with a quadzilla adrenaline? Thanks

lobsterman04 12-13-2012 10:21 AM

Raptor, FASS, or Airdog. Any of the three will suffice. Better leave the Adrenaline off until you get a lift pump.:scare2:
