cutting off air filter flow for smoke....

hey guys, im kinda curious how much smoke id make if i put a plastic bag over my air filter and started my truck and drove it around a little. How bad would this hurt the truck to do, if i only did it for like 5 min or so

CHenry 03-24-2007 10:25 AM

i wouldn't run at all...cutting off the air is one way to effectively kill a diesel since they don't need electricity to run, only air and fuel.

Johnny Cetane 03-24-2007 10:36 AM

i guess i'm interested in why you'd WANT to do this??? if you're wanting to make it smoke, lock open your wastegate or slide the afc and starwheel forward.

edit... i didn't see the year of ur truck til now. never mind about the afc and wheel then!! :)

CHenry 03-24-2007 10:41 AM

Put an SCT custom tuner on it (I think Dodges can do this) and they make a smoke tune just for people like you! :D

GetBlown5.9 03-24-2007 10:44 AM

that is retarded, nothing like risking a $600 turbo, and a $7000 engine to get a little smoke.

CHenry 03-24-2007 10:45 AM

Retarded? You mean the SCT tuner?

CumminsCrazed 03-24-2007 10:46 AM

but im getting antzy for SMOKE....what if i just did it for lkike 10 sec. and revved it once

CumminsCrazed 03-24-2007 10:47 AM

whats the SCT tuner???? how much and where can i get one

CHenry 03-24-2007 10:53 AM

Cut off the air and it will kill the engine.

Maybe one of our sponsors can lead you to one. I know where you can get one but I don't want to bring up non sponsor names without permission from DM or Whit.

scarecrow 03-24-2007 10:55 AM

if you really want smoke that bad...and you have gauges cause your EGT`s will go thru the roof you can pop the intercooler boot off....the truck will have no power but smoke like you could not imagine.....if you dont have gauges i would not reccomend this.....

Johnny Cetane 03-24-2007 11:08 AM

th ebest advice i can giv eyou is be patient and build your truck. it'll smoke when it's ready. having a stock truck belching out clouds of soot is like putting a fart can muffler on a ricer. or an 8' whip on a truck without a cb. function should always come before form. and smoke is just unburnt fuel anyway. ,ost ppl are gonna look at ur truck like a scrap heap if ur constantly blacking the world out.

be patient. it'll happen. just my $.02.

CumminsCrazed 03-24-2007 11:16 AM

ugh.....but a i want power AND smoke......

CHenry 03-24-2007 11:18 AM

A tuber like the SCT will make it smoke AND go fast. But you do need guages cause those EGTS will hit high in a few seconds with such a performance tune. Again though, i don't know for sure that SCT will work on Dodges but I can't think of a reason they wouldn't. I know it is popular umong the PSD guys. I do'nt have one but will soon. A buddy of mine has one and his truck is FAST and it will lay down a trail of coal on WOT.

i know ya do, but like i said, be patient. sit down today and give urself an honest assessment of how fast you can afford to go. then start from there keeping in mind all the incidental upgrades u'll need for the rest of the truck. once u get that done get ahold of shane at wicked diesels. i've never done business with him..yet, but he seems committed to us so give him a holler.

like i said, take my words for what u want. just big brother advice from some clown ya met on the internet.

or you could buy a Ford 6.OH NO and wait for it to create it's own smoke show when it has a leaky injector or a blowed headgasket, or an egr cooler blowing apart......

oh that was mean.... Lord I apologize and be with the starving pigmy's Cummins Forum is sponsoring down in New Guinea.... Amen....

DISCLAIMER i was not bashing the Ford 6.0 motor just highlighting the problems they have had in the past......

Mslaughter 03-24-2007 02:04 PM

You COULD use cardboard and block off half or so of the air filter. I know a jackass that did it on his friends powerstroke. It did smoke more but it was retarded because the truck was slow as hell and just smoked. Like mentioned above ricer with fart can  Just my $.02

MnTom 03-24-2007 05:36 PM

The first thing to do is get gauges. There are boxes that have them built in. With one of them you could 'kill' two birds with one stone. If you want more smoke then think about some injectors.

NukleusX 03-24-2007 06:31 PM

see zach, the first thing i did with my new truck i got a week ago was put in gauges the day after i got it. i know you are working on getting them yourself, but seriously, until then wait on anything else.

i love smoke myself, though i am at the moment practicing the whole practicality over goddarn fun ya know? takin things slow on my end with my new rig is all....

TEXASPOWER 03-24-2007 06:54 PM

if u want to make smoke with out mods just undue one of your intercooler boots, but it wont run worth a crap and though lots of codes prob:p:

GetBlown5.9 03-24-2007 09:27 PM

btw, there are no SCT tunes fro dodges...those are for fords as far as i know.

ive never heard of SCT doing anything other than ford tunes for trucks, and mustangs

Benjamin 03-25-2007 01:20 PM

SCT also does GM Gas burners....

CHenry 03-25-2007 01:27 PM

yeah. i wasn't sure what or if SCT had anything for the Dodge.
Some other comperable programmer would be what?

Benjamin 03-25-2007 01:30 PM

smarty for the dodge... but that's no comparison..... Smarty>SCT

Monster Truck 03-28-2007 06:21 PM

Im surprised no one has come up with this yet

UNPLUG THE MAP SENSOR!!! it will make it alil groggy till you get a box on it but it will smoke. Id say just do it right and bomb it but this will get you some smoke.

Wont work, you have to have some kind of readings off of the Map. Mine did all kinds of wierd things when I tryed it. I have my comp hooked as an EZ and it will blow a nice cloud on take off with the map unplugged but comp hooked up.

Andy

hntruckman 03-28-2007 07:37 PM

yea with out the map sensor plugged in the truck will only build 10lbs boost and be slow. the only way this works is if you have a box on it such as the ez or a comp. mine has been unplugged all winter with my comp puts a nice cloud out as you have seen zack i want me some injectors to get my real smoke.
:f:

Monster Truck 03-28-2007 10:45 PM

like I said it will be slow but will smoke like he wants and it wont hurt anything, then onece he gets a box it will be back to normal response.

DazedandConfused 03-29-2007 05:57 AM

Mine never smoked when I did that. Set off every light on my dash, and transmission would not shift into OD with it unpluged. Pluged it back in and all the problems went away. I never saw a puff of smoke with it unplugged on a stock truck.

Kick Start 03-29-2007 08:41 AM

un plug the map sensor and it will smoke, i didnt lose any power the one time i did it.

GetBlown5.9 03-29-2007 12:48 PM

AGAIN...if you do not have a comp box, or ez or other similar power adding box that plugs into the map sensor it WILL NOT smoke with the sensor unplugged.

with the sensor unplugged and no aftermarket box there the truck will not fuel at all...the ECM sees no boost and will not allow the VP44 to inject any fuel. thats why the truck is slow and wont spool past 10psi.

CumminsCrazed 03-29-2007 05:58 PM

i knew this before anyone told me to try it.....thats why i havent unplugged it lol!!

SuperDave4x4 03-29-2007 07:51 PM

That or get some large sticks and you'll see plenty of smoke!

Ben 03-30-2007 09:08 AM

I thought unplugging the map sensor only worked with a comp also.

Dang.....If I would of realized before we had the same truck I would of offered you my old catcher for cheap.......

You would of had your smoke then.

BTW -

for grins and giggles, here is a picture of a stab of the throttle while in neutral with the old catcher.....

Bosshawg600 03-30-2007 10:34 AM

just trade for a 12v that is modded I know where 1 is for you

Here is a example of my Edge Comp with the MAP sensor unplugged!

As far as I know this only work with the EDGE COMP and NOT the EDGE JUICE!
