Got an idea need some help
My lift pump went out today. second day of owning this truck and i cant even drive it. it will turn over but wont crank. I know i can buy a new lift pump and i have heard a couple of my buddies talkinf about p pumping their 24 valves and was wondering what all i could do to make this happen. Sorry for the wordy thread and thanks in advance for any help, im new to the diesel world

So are you thinking your lift pump went out or your injection pump? If it's your lift pump just replace it with an airdog or fass and be done with it. There's a lot involved in p pumping a 24v. Not to mention about $2600 or more in parts. The hotrod vp's are good for some serious horsepower, the monster vp's even more so. And that'll save ya at least 1k in cash. Sucks that you just got it and it the bed on you tho. Can you hear the lift pump run when you bump the key?

i got fed up with it today and called my diesel buddy. he told me to get a carter lift pump and put it in for now since i just need it running and am not upgrading till the cash gets right. i went ahead and changed the fuel filter and in the bottom of the filter housing was a handful of dirt debris so i pulled it and cleaned it out real good. Im going to finish it up tomorrow and hopefully everything will be fine

Sounds good

i guess the best way for me to install a temporary fuel gauge would be to install a t off the output side of the lift pump before the vp44 and run it from there. how does that sound. and remeber this is temporary untill i get my gauge pod in next week
|
Or just do it right the first time and get a banjo bolt that has the 1/8" npt port in it. Then you can just run the gauge off that. I know theyre available on jkidd's website... Here a link... Diesel Auto Power- Good Service, Great Products, Excellent Prices!!! Willing to match/beat any legitimate price.

with that new carter pump i dont think im going to be able to use the banjo bolts. im going to try to but its looking like its going to be some fittings instead of the banjo bolts
|
Is it a filtered pump? If not then just run the carter pump to the stock fuel canister and keep everything the same from the canister to the vp44. Then use that banjo with the 1/8" port
|
ahhhh, making sense now. I guess ill have to rig something up till i get my banjo bolt in. Thanks for the help
|
Yeah it needs to be filtered some how some way... If i recall correctly the fitting into the fuel canister is the same as the banjo bolt sizing. So in theory you could run fuel pressure off either or... But in general yes you do need the fuel pump and the banjo bolt... And no problem man

yeah now im pretty sure my vp44 is fried. replaced the lift pump and bled the lines, still no cranking, but still havent got any codes from the dash or the scanner. Im fed up with it, i think im going to buy and airdog and an upgraded vp44 and a set of injectors. Might as well blow the whole wad
|
Have you installed the fuel pressure guage yet? sometimes a VP-44 will die without setting a code but thats somewhat unusual. I would make sure that the pump is dead before I bought a new one - but its definitely not sounding good.
Dont waste youre money on an upgraded VP-44. An SO pump is more than fine. Try to get a pump that has new electronics. Good call on the Airdog. FYI, there are alos mechanical pumps - Glacier Diesel and Mitusa as well. |
An upgraded VP44 isn't necessary for a daily driver. Unless your looking to make a sled puller, I wouldn't waste the cash.
|
thanks for the tips. that should save some money. As far as testing the pump to see if it bad, how do i go about doing that? Im new to diesel and have learned alot in the past week just seems that im not learning the RIGHT things
|
unless you upgrade to a monster pump there is no gain going to an hrvp etc. Get a good sovp 44 and a good lift pump and you will be very happy. If your going the injectors route decide what you want as a hp goal first so you don't buy multiple sets of injectors.

Are you sure you have fuel to the head? Did you try taking the lines loose where they meet the connecting tubes at the head and making sure theres fuel after the vp?

call me if you need help.

i seemed to have had a problem like what your having about 2 months ago. a buddy told me that the easiest way to make sure that your injector pump is working or not is to get a 0-15 psi gauge and get the fittings needed to put it in one of the two holes where you see little black plug bolts on top of your fuel filter. once you get that done then you can start your engine. your lift pump should be pushin around 13 psi to your injector pump if i remember right. and when you rev the engine the psi should go down, if it doesn't then the injector pumps bad. but im not sure how to check it if you cant get the thing running. hope this helps you though!! :tu:
