"Caution: Failure to center the drag link inner and outer joint caps over the joint ball studs before tightening the adjuster sleeve clamps could cause joint failure."

Doesn't matter what truck it's on. Could be a home-built dune buggy, using that steering linkage.

So bottom line is I have a stock 2000 with 16" stock wheels. This kit should work? Would a Dodge dealer know or probably will say it wont do you think

NadirPoint 11-15-2011 11:59 AM

Of course it will "work," one way or the other, but any dealer will probably decline to install it, based on policy alone. They just don't do that kind of parts swapping. It's a policy issue based on liability.

RandoH 11-15-2011 12:10 PM

I was just meaning in regards to them selling it to me for an install, not them actually installing it. I was just trying to make sure it would fit with stock wheels etc before purchase, thanks

flatbedr 11-16-2011 11:50 PM

diesel power products told me they did this on one of there trucks a 98 12v an it fit without having to change anything.

Mocus 11-29-2011 01:16 PM

I was wondering how this was holding up? Would like to do it to my 1997 2500 4x4. This is the information that I have found online and would like your opinion.

Dodge Factory upgrade

DT Fabrications (Looks like the factory setup too, $350)
DTP02031-1 HD STEERING LINKAGE

Also found the linkage setup for 2010-2011 trucks online at Dodge Parts for $280.

Am going to do this soon. My stock stuff is worn and is unstable. My truck is stock, 2500, 1997, 4x4, 16 inch rims. Thanks for all your postings and I hope this information helps others too.

NadirPoint 11-30-2011 10:30 AM

I've had the upgraded steering on my '07 for almost 2 years/30k miles now and it's doing great, no issues whatsoever.

gyayo2012 12-02-2011 06:03 PM

^ ^Really? from what I understand you need to ream the older 2nd gens,.... 00-02 had difrent knuckles and pitman!.. I would love to put this on my truck but dont want to go spend the $$ on something not to bolt in! let me know if anyone has pics or some real solid info for the older 2nd gens

There is no reason this won't fit inside stock wheels.

The dealer couldn't care less what you put it on, so just ask them for the part numbers specified in the first post, and bolt it on! It should fit your stock 2000 4x4 perfectly.:tu:

ajlester 12-19-2011 07:25 AM

as soon as my current moog parts wear out this is going on my truk and my uncles 05 is ready for it now thanks for this thread man.

lunk 12-19-2011 12:30 PM

i wiil be doing that when the time comes

gyayo2012 12-29-2011 10:30 PM

dose amyone know what size reemer to get so you can fit this steering set up on the younger 96 cummins?

And I took pics.:hellox:

Note that for the pictures, I put a thin coat of gear marking compound inside the tapered hole only - I did not put any on the rod end itself. The rod end was inserted into the taper until it bottomed out, and then pulled straight out. Looks like a nice match to me. The funny marks at the top of the tapered hole are where the rod end threads bumped it as it came out.

You are right that the older trucks (pre '99 maybe?) have a different size/taper for the tie rod end, but the newer 2nd gens have the bigger version. The 98-99 HD steering is probably the best "bolt on" setup for the older 2nd gens, but it still doesn't compare in size and strength to the 09-10 steering that could be installed with an easy re-taper job on the knuckles and pitman arm.

Hope this helps.:c:

Bryson, I have a 99' 2500. Will this work, or do I need to seem the knuckles? I've got a lot slop in the steering and it suck when towing. Is there also an upgrade for the steering box?

Thanks,
Sean

94dizzyram 01-21-2012 02:56 PM

I would get a psc steering box. Its a pretty big investment up front but its a good box. You can also get a box brace, but if your current box is worn out it wont help much. I would stay away from the reman boxes you get at local parts stores because they are mostly junk.

skav 01-22-2012 03:43 PM

Im pretty sure that I have aftermarket tie rods on the front end. Could anybody confirm this from my pictures? Is the 09 steering different than what I already have?

Looks like some sort of Luke's Link, but I thought those are only made for rebuilding a tracbar?

Anyways, just put 98-99 HD steering on my 98.5. Bolted right up, replaced everything else too and no more clunking and feels solid. FINALLY!

Where did you get that 5100 Bilstein series dampener?

I'll look into the 98-99 HD steering.

What track bar bracket do you have?

Mine seems to have a lot of flex.

I called PSC about a box, and was told that they don't make one anymore for the 98. They suggested Borgeson or red head. Any ideas which is better? I'd like to get it tapped for hydraulic assist too.

NadirPoint 02-08-2012 05:33 PM

There's an outfit called Steer & Gear in Columbus that does great things with these type boxes. I've used them a couple times and they do quality work. They can at least rebuild to your box to better than new spec, or possibly sell you a replacement outright. Give them a call:

I called red head and talked to them today. They rebuild the stock units w larger needle bearings and new gears. I ordered the box from them, so I'll post my results after the install. I also plan to replace the tie rods w the 09-10 molar unit.

This is just Awesome i am going to do this on my 2000. Thanks for the post!:jump:

bryson 02-14-2012 03:12 PM

Glad this is working for many of you! I have even heard that there are people finding the steering kit now from Mopar for <$200 with club/wholesale discounts! That's hard to beat.:tu:

Can anyone that has retro-fitted this to the older 2nd gens ('99 and older?) post up what taper they used to ream the knuckles and pitman arm?

24valver112 02-14-2012 09:06 PM

I put 2010 steering, a new box, and a PSC box brace on mine. LOVE it

capt44 03-06-2012 12:14 PM

Much appreciated never would of thunk. Next on the list, Truck looks good under there.

gyayo2012 06-02-2012 06:17 PM

Grease fittings

I did this on my 07 4wd and it was great. I just drilled and screwed grease fittings into the assembly so I was able to lube it. This should help it last longer for you.

That's a pretty simple fix for sure...:c:

Source Automotive already does this for you. Dodge Upgraded Steering Linkage

Not knocking Source at all (I have given them lots of my money, and they will surely have more of it in the future) but I assume their kit is simply a factory Dodge part with grease zerks added. I'd rather save the extra $100 and drill my own holes.:w2:

It is nice that they offer it that way though.:tu:

Where are you guys getting the adjustable sway bar end links? Thanks!

I think Thuren, Kore, and others make and sell them, but I just built mine with some weld-in threaded inserts, some tubing and some heim joints I sourced from a local race/fab shop. If I were to do it again, I'd just buy some that are done and ready to rock - the amount of money I saved by building my own was negligible at best.

Marine 08-02-2013 03:24 PM

Thanks. I called Don and left a VM. Tuff Country also makes them I found out.

skav 08-26-2013 09:06 AM

I just did this upgrade over the weekend on my 99, along with a red head steering box.

It's way tighter now. It actually moves before I turn the wheel a 1/4 turn!;)

I had the red head ported for ram assist, so that should also help.

Cornfed 1020 08-26-2013 07:48 PM

was wondering do i have to get aftermarket tie rod ends or what im deployed right now and have nothing better to do then look stuff up on diesel bombers. i have the 01 with stock everything up there. skav how much was your red head. i dont need the hydro assisted but just wondering since im already about to be that deep in it might as well replace that

jigabop 08-27-2013 11:44 AM

if you do the 4th gen steering assembly this thread talks about, you don't need aftermarket tie rod ends. it is a direct bolt in replacement.

if you are running factory wheels you will need to grind down the ends of the tie rod studs for wheel clearance, but that is it.

I have aftermarket offset wheels, so mine clears just fine.

silverbullet1 10-13-2013 10:00 PM

Just installed this upgrade on my '02 last week, huge improvement for $300 investment. But has anyone else had a problem with the drag link rubbing the front of the oil pan? Also is it recommended to retorque all the nuts after a few hundred miles?

Rail 10-22-2013 12:09 PM

uh, hey, I did the swap when the front end tried to shake me out of the cab, fried the Upper and lower ball joints too. My factory tierods, acquired in June of this year have Zerks? so does the new BD track bar and the (moog) ball joints I just installed. The parts guy said these were different than he had seen in the past, corrosion resistant nuts and all. :rocking:
