Tell me what turbo to run

'01 24v auto, DDP 110s, Edge J/A, AirDog, 3.54s and 35" tires... Daily driver.

I've got a HE351 on it now (60/60/9) and it seems to me that there is not enough air to make things run happy. It's a smokey pig, and the EGTs aren't awesome. Even with low-boost fuel turned down, I think there is way too much fuel to let the turbo light, and even when it does, the smoke is far from gone. I tow some, usually about 5k lbs, and on rare occasion up to 10k. I live @ about 4500 ft elev, and often drive/tow higher than that. Lots of hills/mountain passes. Not much for sled pulling or racing, but I'd like it to be fun to drive still.

I'd like input on what turbo would be a good fit for my setup. Don't want it to be too laggy, and I need manageable EGTs. I'd love twins, but that isn't in the budget right now. So, what's a good single to run and why?

id say a 64/65/12 would be a good set up with what ur running

Agreed, a larger exhaust housing would benefit you! I went from a 9cm HY35, to a 12cm HX35 and liked the results.

Honestly I think your biggest help would be to switch to 4.10s. You'll give up a little on the top end but I think you'll like the acceleration a bit better. A manual can get away with running those higher gears. An auto with a tight converter, not so much.

4.10s are certainly in the plans, but do you think the 3.54s would be the sole reason for my lag?

I haven't driven your truck So I don't know your definition of lag. A guy I know has a 3.55s 37in tires and about the same fuel and air setup as me and loves it. Lag is pretty subjective.

Have you ever tried leak testing your air system? A HE351 should spool pretty fast. You might have an air leak between the turbo and the engine or possibly have a cracked exhaust manifold or maybe a leaking gasket? All those could be part of your problem. Elevation doesn't help you out much either.

What is your max boost?

Intake system is tested and tight up to 40lbs, and I can't find any evidence of the exhaust side leaking either. Max boost (as displayed on the Edge J/A which I know may not be very accurate) is 35#.

Elevation is definitely not helping, but isn't this turbo one that should work better than most in this case?

I wonder if I just have a bunk turbo?

Thanks everyone for the help.:tu:

62/71/14 would be a good choice. You might be overfueling that turbo in the low end.
