Id rather do it the right way and save the syncros and have to change the clutch out than tear apart the tranny frequently to replace syncros because I was lazy with the left foot

None of the light truck transmissions have the proper cut gears, nor the rotating mass, nor the clutch brake of the big-rig trucks in order to shift without a clutch.

While it may "seem" as if you are shifting seamlessly without a clutch, you are not, and the syncro rings are paying the price. Save a couple hundred on replacement clutches (which do not wear out from shifting) and spend a couple thousand on transmission builds (on a transmission that is out of production, with hard to find parts). :argh:

i think it kind of depends on how u drive to if ur always slammin gears its goin to where out no matter what u do but clutchin is deffinitly easier on everything and when ever i tow i usually double clutch it thats just my theory behind shifting

Hate to sound like a newbie but what's double clutch shifting?

FastCR 06-08-2010 11:47 PM

push in clutch, shift to neutral, let out clutch, push in clutch, shift to next gear, let out clutch iiuc.

even though your not grinding, the synchros are being thrashed not clutching shifts. These transmissions are not set up for non clutched shifting. if they were, your shifts would probably fail 90% of the time because no matter how close you think you have them synced, the sychros are working thus you don't know whether your syncing them or not.

yup fast cr knows double clutchin my family is all truckers i was drivin my dads 18 speed kenworth log truck when i was 13 so i know about every way to shift two years ago my clutch was goin out and i got real familiar with double clutchin anyway i always double clutch when towin heavy

Double clutchin sure won't hurt anything, that's a fact. The old trucks just would'nt hold clutch pressure that well or take the high pressures that well, they leaked it off as you held the pedal in, but these new fangled hydraulic ones will hold it all day long.

Hated those old dual stick trucks that you had to double clutch on, I was so glad to see those things go. Then years later and joined the military and it was back to double clutchin again for some years.

I figure plain and simple that if your transmission has syncros in in, you CAN power shift. If it does not have syncros, it is inadvisable. Many people think they have a syncro mesh transmission, mostly because it sounds cool. Fact of the matter is that most light duty truck transmission do not have syncros.

So sorry for my ignorance but why exactly would you wanna double clutch while towing heavy loads?
