--mods, mods, mods!--

This is my first of many posts here!

Well i got a 01 Single cab 24V that was my dads and he recently gave it to me (Thanks Dad) and i hate that its stock. Im getting wheels/tires this week but also want to make it a little faster!

I want to add a Smarty but my buddy who's got one says they are only good if you have aftermarket trans, turbo, w.e or ill mess something up. Can anyone clarify that for me? or is there something better for a more stock truck.

Also want to add an exhaust, wheres a good, cheap place to find like a 4' turbo back?

Anything else i should to looking at. I cant spent more then 4 grand and the wheels n tires are quite i bit! Thanks a lot!!:tu:

gauges, GOOD lift pump, and if you start playen with power with the auto be saven for some parts for the tranny

fuel pressure gauge is a must,

Get some gauges, Airdog or Fass, edge comp and exhaust kit. The save for trans upgrades, turbo and injectors.

Thanks for all the replies! I was looking at your site and the Juice w/Attitude says it replaces gauges? Could i just do that instead and get an exhaust would that be decent for now? Thanks for the help guy!

Don't forget to check the for sale section to see what you can get a deal on. I'd think someone would make you a better deal since you're in the military.

and lift pump major importance on these trucks.

_USMC_ 02-15-2010 07:21 PM

alright thanks. Im thinkin ima need injectors soon anyways the truck "bogs" when you stomp on it?

Diesel Dawgs Performance 02-15-2010 07:30 PM

The Edge Juice works great since its got the Guages Built into it.

Thats the shock lift pump crying for help along with your vp44 not happy.

Diesel Dawgs Performance 02-15-2010 07:38 PM

First thing I would do is get a Fuel Pressure gauge installed.

if you get the juice with attitude and a fass airdog or raptor you will be good to go. the smarty doesn't add much to these compared to the edge etc.

i know we sound like a broken record but a lift pump is one of the very first things that need upgraded on a vp44 truck. yes there a lil pricey, but its better than the 1500+ it would cost to get a new stock lift pump, vp44 and labor if your stock lp goes out.

the smarty dont add much by there selfs in the second gens. when there stacked is when the smarty comes alive with the vp44.

i would go with the adrenaline w/ pulse monitor or the edge juice with attitude.

another very weak point in your setup is the stock TC. i tore mine up with just a set of rv injectors which are just a 40 hp injector. if your easy on it they will hold for awhile, but if u drive a vehicle hard, u might look into upgrading the TC before the performance :tu:

good luck with it all and welcome to db

so im reading for a while. it seems that for this series of trucks a airdog 150, edge comp w/att, exhaust, bhaf......does the edge w/ att have a fuel pressure gauge on it?

mainman300 03-04-2010 10:21 PM

:rocking:yes sir it does.

I just posted this on another thread, but I think it's good enough to repeat...

bomb'ing" your truck is a very slippery slope, and you can easily find yourself in a cycle of modd'ing one part which in turn causes a weakness in another area. For example... your 24 valve Cummins is a VERY VERY VERY SOLID platform with a VERY VERY VERY SORRY (and expensive) injection pump.

I FULLY SUPPORT increasing the power of these motors... and I FULLY SUPPORT doing it RIGHT.

In my humble opinion, here's my prescription for more power - RELIABLY.

1. Fix Fuel Supply System -> FASS, Raptor, AirDog
2. Increase Airflow -> BHAF or aftermarket intake
3. Get the air out -> 4" exhaust
4. Add some way to monitor your Pressure's and EGT's - I suggest Edge or Quadzilla for 99% of applications
5. Add some POWER! ->The same Edge or Quadzilla "box, chip, tuner" suggested above
6. For Mo' Powah, you could drop in a set of mild injectors -> RV275's or one of the many 65hp injectors.

That's should be good for about a 100hp bump and over a couple hundred ft/lbs of tq over stock. Anything over that and you'll need to look at things like bigger turbo's, bigger injectors, etc.

The cost of all this is around $1500. Cheaper than the cost of a quality injector pump or turbo or long block. Just adding a "box, chip, puck, tuner" could easily cause the failure of any one of the aforementioned parts...

If you do it... do it right.

BTW. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE SIR!!!!!!!!!

If I was gonna start all over here is my list. I went through most of the stuff I could when mine still had the VP44. Most of the exact mods I would recommend would be on what you would use the truck for and what your realistic HP goals are. For a fun 400hp street truck you dont need much but the basics and maybe a little more than what I have listed below.

Guages
lift pump
exhaust/intake
tourque converter/valve body
Chip or programmer
turbo/injectors
