silencer ring?

I have heard of people taking a "silencer ring" out of the turbo for more noise. I was wondering if this is possible, and if so how do you do it?

Sawman 12-31-2009 06:13 PM

take air inlet off turbo, then use a small screw driver to pry up one ear on snap ring while working a curved pick or another screw driver behind snap ring once it strats to come out it will come pretty easy the hard part is getting it started. dont get in a hurry turbos are expensive.. After snap ring is out the tin plate will almost fall out:tttt:

Yep X2 pretty much it there was a thread in here some where that showed it but can't seem to find it now but its pretty simple to do just as sawman said :tu:

Would a small screwdriver work better or a regular size screwdriver? Just wondering thanks ahead of time?

dustys24valve 01-01-2010 08:31 AM

Small is better....not much room to get under the snapring in that groove':tu:

i took mine out a while back, it really makes a diff on the in cab sound. i think there is a video on youtube that shows how to take it out.

2500superram 01-02-2010 06:21 PM

now your truck will sound like a city bus:rocking:

scottsjeeprolet 01-02-2010 06:30 PM

I've heard removing the ring is good for 5 HP.:moon:

powerwhore02 01-02-2010 08:02 PM

LOL!! I gained 17.5 HP after I took mine out:w2: But ya its easy as pie.

2500superram 01-03-2010 09:44 AM

in gas engine's you might lose a little hp.the anti-surge upset's the air flowing into the turbo.

i have a all stock 98 24v and i am goin to be getting a 4' straight pipe and intake and i was going to take the silencer ring out of turbo and was wondering if i took it out now with everthing stock if it will hurt or not do any good yet.. or if i should wait till i do exhaust.... by the way i have a 4' exhaust with stock muffler and resinator.. let me know thanks everyone :tu:

crzycummins 10-22-2010 08:37 AM

no it will not hurt anything by taking it out. adding your axhaust and intake will amplify the sound that much more.:tu:

dieselboy88 10-31-2010 09:11 AM

taking the silencer ring out of the will make it sound like a jet when you get on it. no joke iv had mine off for a while now and ill never put it back on as long as i have it. :rocking: as for hp gain iv seen numerous posts online that say theres no hp gain by taking out the ring. o btw if you have a cold air intake it makes it sound that much louder because the whistling is not contained in the quarter panel where the stock air filter draws air. it puts the whistle under the hood where it should be. :tu:

big willy 11-01-2010 02:11 AM

yeah i took mine out of my 95 and i have a K&N cold air and it screams when i really get it going

01ctd 11-01-2010 09:49 AM

hello,

Personally I love the turbo whistle but my wife likes it quite and she's the boss. Either I kick her out of the truck (NOT POSSIBLE) or reinstall the silencer ring. The ring mysterious banish from my glove compartment. now I need to know if any wants to part the ring for very little cost?

big willy 11-01-2010 10:01 AM

that's a major bummer i'd give you mine in a heartbeat if it didn't get put in the trash the moment it was taken out good luck on finding one

Do you remove the silencer ring just to create a turbo whistle. Does it whistle when you at WOT or when you just cruise?

yea thats all it does. and it whistles when you get on it AND while your cruising. it does nothing to the performance but it sounds great none the less. :rocking:

Gazoo 12-10-2010 04:46 PM

So this ring is not any type of bearing or alignment piece. In other words the turbo is going to blow apart early because the piece is missing?? Might be dumb question just don't want to do any damage to my 02

Farmboy 2.0 12-10-2010 04:53 PM

Not on the HX 35 but the new VGT's will come apart if you remove that ring

Gazoo 12-10-2010 05:57 PM

That makes sense it was a guy with fairly new truck warning me not to do it, but I'm all about the whistle :w2: and it seems like a easy upgrade. My auto truck has HX 35 I take it? read somewhere on here bout HX 40
