Back pressure

I just put a straight pipe on my truck, i love the sound but what i even like more is it boosts off idle. But the guy that i consolt on decisions was against me gettin a straight pipe because he said that if there was no back pressure when i cut off my truck the turbo would keep spinning but quit gettin oil and it would eventully mess up my turbo. Im just wonderin is there any truth to this or is he full of it?

ja-mudder 12-10-2009 09:16 PM

If this is true Iv never seen any problem that would lean that way
if it was to it will take alot of years and by then the mpg savings will buy you a new shiny turbo and a set of injectors to match:c:

:nope:

This is another one of those controversial issues that have been proven on the Dyno's but straight pipes are cool so nobody will believe the results. Dyno's have shown a small power loss with straight pipes versus a good aftermarket exhaust. I can't tell you why myself. Most guy's say that diesel's don't require any back pressure but everything I've read and been told by professional dieseler's is that they like a minimal amount of back pressure. Were talkin 3 pounds and less of pressure.

Im not much worried about dynos but imo goin from stock exahust to the straight pipe is like night and day my turbo boosts from idle and alot quicker and its only temporariy untell i have the money for a performance exahust so for now im happy :yeah:

Uncle Bubba 12-10-2009 10:19 PM

:tu: Anything is better then the stock exhaust. Them are the most restrictive things Dodge could have designed for these trucks and that's a fact.

Nothin wrong with a straight pipe as long as the law dogs don't pay attention to it but if your bein picky about wantin every every ounce of HP they aren't the way. And in some areas the law dogs do pay attention to them. We have more then one member that have paid that fine.

i dont see how it would matter having straight exhaust has nothing to do with the turbo on oiling when you turn the motor off the oil stops weather you have a muffler or not and your turbo will will still spin after shut off it spins all the time when motor is running and if you have a good turbo it will take a sec for it to slow down or at least myn did when i had my stock exhaust and i turned the motor off. now it might not spin as long after motor shut but it still spins

diesel_fireman20001 12-10-2009 11:09 PM

never heard that about wearing out the turbo faster :pca1:

hotlb7 12-10-2009 11:40 PM

I HATE STRAIGHT PIPED STREET DIESELS. SUPER ANNOYING.

blkjack 12-10-2009 11:49 PM

Naw if the engine is running the turbo is gettin oil has nothing to do with back pressure or having a muffler on it. I straight piped mine a month ago and love the way it sounds the only regret i have is that i didnt do it sooner. :jump: :choochoo:

A Cummins doesnt need any backpressure. They run best with a straightpipe. Will not hurt your turbo one bit.

Better look for another "consultant" too.

not true dyno proven that you will build boost faster and your motor will run mode efficient at lower RPM with some kind of baffle trapping 13% to 24% of exaust i have a straight pipe on mine with a baffle at a 10* angle 18in from the turbo and i can tell the difference between with and without

Uncle Bubba 12-11-2009 01:12 AM

As I said.

Ok, so maybe I was a little off there. But a straightpipe will not damage your turbo.

I had a 3" straightpipe - hated it.

Went to a 4" with the muffler - its still too loud.

luke46 12-12-2009 11:57 AM

I had my original exhaust on then I straight piped as soon as I bought the truck so I had 3 inch straight pipe. Just installed thursday 4 inch down pipe to 5 inch straight expandit exhaust and it made a notable difference and sounds great. My truck is only for work I don't drive it every day so I love the massive noise. Plus it spools faster and hits me 1-2 more psi boost I could theorize on it but I don't care it works great for me.:c:

Got Boost ? 12-12-2009 08:28 PM

Straight piped my truck 2nd day i had it !! Best 30 dollar mod ive ever done lol.... help mileage too went from 15.6 to 17.2

BlackedOut02 12-16-2009 09:29 PM

yeah... about that.... id fire your "consultant". if that was true everyone with stacks (not to menstion hood stacks) would be eating turbos constantly.

NCFPD 12-16-2009 09:48 PM

so does pipe size from the turbo back make a diff. in sound like makes it lower or higher pitched. i have the stock downpipe back to the back of the cab going into 4inch and then 5inch stacks. I like the low deep tone that some of the cummins have but mine sounds more high sounding than most would 4inch all the way back change anything
