Transmission

hey, new on here. wondering what the best thing to do for an automatic transmission in a 2001 2500 cummins. mine has a little over 200k on it and slips a little bit. i really like the ATS transmissions and torque converters but they are really exspensive. just looking for some ideas before it goes out...any suggestions appreciated.

I personally like suncoast. When I got my new tranny, I called them and spent about half an hour on the phone discussing my options and what tranny would hold to what I've done to my truck now and what my future plans were. Also Georend makes some nice trannies

DTT is a realy good brand in opinion

We deal the most with Suncoast and havent had a problem, very good people to work with and they make some great transmissions along with Georend, HTS and DTT. I personally think Ats trannies are overpriced and would rather go with one of the others mentioned. First of all what are your intentions with the truck? Fill out your sig and let us know what ya got and give us an idea what the future holds for the truck and what it is used for. As for your slipping tranny could be the torque converter or the clutches. If the internals are good then I would suggest a tripple disc torque converter and a valvebody. But since it has 200k on it, it might be time for a heavy duty rebuild kit along with the torque converter and valvebody. If we can be of any assistance let me know:tu:

I've had my Suncoast for 150,000 mi. and hasn't missed a beat and I have run it pretty hard a few times. Still has a lot snap when it shifts, all my clothes have coffee stains on front:argh: I have nothing but all good with Goerends too. :tu:

thanks

alright, thanks for the advice. cant afford a lot right now might just try to get some prices on a re-build. i dont plan on puttin it through alot but i drive kinda ruff and want a better chip, eventually pump and injectors. so any tranny that can hold up to that is good.

the best thing to do for an automatic transmission in a 2001 2500 cummins
Naturally the best thing you could do for it would be to slide it under your bench for safe keeping, that way it'll never cost you any more money:w2: That is after you get your 6 spd put in:tu: Seriously though I think there are a lot of good auto builders out there, just have to match the build to the mods :c:

Where are you located? If you are on a budget, shipping will eat alot of that budget up. You can usually get a rebuild with quality components for roughly the same price as purchasing a unit, but save $700 in freight. Builders are scattered across the country, so you should be fairly close to one wherever you are.

im around winston salem NC. a friend of mine said he could build me one, but i didnt know if it would be better to do that or buy one. most companies have a warranty on whole transmissions? if you get someone to do it what kind of warranty can i look for?

turbo20psi 12-16-2009 04:17 AM

That warranty would be between you and the builder or company for a rebuild. You have L@N performance down by you in hickory ,NC area. You can give them a call and they will set you up to your budget they are a dealer for suncoast.

Give Ole at Powerbypoole.com a call. He is in Salisbury NC.

All great ideas! Now i was in your boat. except my truck wouldn't move(trans). I bought the parts from Transtar and rebuilt it with my uncle. Tha convertor is obviously an ATI and the internals are transgo and transtar. He told me to call around and ask questions. Its simple to do if you have a 15-20 ton press for the overdrive unit. And the correct size drill bits for the shift kit. The hard part is getting it out and putting it back in. ATI also makes a triple disc but i didn't have the funds. The single disc is holding up great. Installed the lock-up switch and a few days later broke the input shaft. So get one of them and a laminated flex plate too:tu:

1500 my cost to do myself. Add 740ish for the input and 440ish for the flex plate.

well im pretty good at mechanic work, so i think i could figure it out if i did it myself. thing is i have never done anything inside of an automatic transmission. could you maybe give me a list of parts i would need, somewhat cheap but i dont wanna have to do it again so they need to hold up.

lobsterman04 12-16-2009 07:05 PM

I can even get you part numbers. But like i said. You WILL NEED a very large press. AT least 10 ton. I used a 50 ton(way over kill). Just give me a few days to get home.( on base and goin home for vacation). And ill get back to you with either a pm or bby posting on this thread.:rocking:

mb5n537 12-16-2009 07:52 PM

alright thank you. i dont have a press of my own but i have access to one. i think is 50 ton also..

lobsterman04 12-17-2009 01:58 PM

the 50 ton makes compressing the overdrive spring super easy:tu: I think it really only requires 2-4 tons of pressure. I honestly can't remember.

mb5n537 12-17-2009 03:35 PM

haha alright, well i think this press should def be big enough. appreciate all this help.

Shea@L&N Performance 12-17-2009 10:58 PM

We can get you a heavy duty rebuild kit from Suncoast, while your in there you might as well put in a good valvebody and torque converter, all new solenoids and things like that. Let me know if we can be of any assistance.

mb5n537 12-17-2009 10:59 PM

whats the price on all of that?
