Triple Turbo Compounds Are Done!

2 Attachment(s)
Well, figured since we were out showing them off at the dyno event at Edge Saturday, I just as well post some pictures. These are just a couple teasers of what's under the hood. I will say this, pictures don't do it justice. Zane and Moose at Wide Open have definitley out done themselves this time.

This setup is good for 50 to 100 pounds of boost. I have hit 60 psi on smarty level two. Still have to do some tuning to the wastegates to get them where we want. Also they start to spool at 1400 rpm's.

That is great! What do you think they are going to put out for horsepower? What injectors are you fueling with?:U:

These turbos are caplable of 50 to 100 psi, I am probably around a true 650. I have DDP 90hp and a small cp3, once we get the wastegastes dialed in I will look into adding some fuel. Right now it is virtually smoke free.

Camotanker 09-08-2009 08:17 PM

OMG! they fit!

where is the bottom turbo and how big is it?

BHaner 09-08-2009 08:25 PM

OMG!!! IS that really the Camotanker???

:rocking:

It is directly underneath the other two, not sure on size I never did measure it. Not sure knowing the mm would help much that measurment really doesent tell you much about a pius turbo.

"No, they aren't twins! They're Triplets!!" Now how many people can say that!:rocking:

that is totaly awsome. :c: lookin forward to seeing more of this thing in the future :pca1:

You got that right, Pius Erbele is pretty quiet about his turbo's but they are second to none:U::c:

jaytric9 09-09-2009 08:42 PM

unbelievable... how the heck do those engines hold all that pressure. insane. but looks incredible.

sstockton 09-09-2009 10:37 PM

Very interesting set up. You don't know what the sizes are though? any idea? Are they 3 medium sized turbos, two big and 1 medium sized, all 3 different sizes? Definitely takes the cake for innovation. Looks very clean too. Good job, I look forward to hearing more about this.

It is really hard to say what sizes they are, but I do know the two atmosphere chargers flow 1000cfm a piece.

tower_ofpower 09-10-2009 03:41 PM

i'd like to see the routing of these things... i've seen one other tripple set up as a prototype online... there was a small high pressure and a medium high pressure turbo... i believe the medium one then force fed the large charger... could be wrong... which is why i'm surrious to see the routing :U: deffinately amazing... roughly 650 hp and virtually smoke free... i love it

sstockton 09-11-2009 10:30 AM

routing is in his picture really. The 2 atmospheric chargers both directly feed the compounding charger. which stays in a close to stock location and that feeds the compounded air into the IC. On the exhaust side, the smaller secondary charger is fed first and wastegated. And then the the exhaust exits into a hot pipe that feeds both atmospheric turbos and is also wastegated.

This set up isn't double compounding, its just using two chargers to provide air for compounding.

This is where I'm having trouble seeing the practical effectiveness, and would like to know a little more information. With 2 larger chargers feeding 1 smaller charger, it seems like there would be a bottle neck in the charger air side of things resulting in relatively high pressure in the first stage of charge air plumbing. If the pressure gets high there, then both chargers will have to work harder to supply air at that pressure and efficiency goes down. It seems like you would want like a 64mm and 2 71mm or a 66mm and 2 74mm chargers at most. and even that might be much. Since the 2 atmospheric turbos are running 4" and don't say schwitzer on the housing, I'm going to guess they are k31's. Probably with a 71mm wheel.

I'm just thinking out loud, seems like a cool set up, but like it might have some tuning/pairing issues to get it dialed. Definitely a good/interesting start. I'm also interested in the double compound idea like mentioned above as well, but it seems like you'd hit some bottle necks there too. And I know its been tried without much success, I looked into doing that before building twins a few years ago, and got steered away.

Nice system. would be curious if the the one farther from the manifold would have less air, and if it would be more efficient if it were smaller.

Very clean:U:

turner5.9 12-06-2009 08:11 AM

did u do all the work your self

12vcummins96 12-06-2009 08:47 AM

nice job its in diesel power:tu:

biged681985 12-06-2009 11:04 PM

glad to see it in DPM. hope to see more of it.

in the artical, it said u might be goin with a BTS transmission. would zane be doing the work, or would u take it to cale here in arkansas. if u bring it to arkansas, shoot me a p.m. id love to see it in person :tu:

Ya its a plumbing nightmare but the setup works good intercooled inbetween stages.

Billy D 06-08-2010 03:53 PM

Can I run a air filter right off the turbo like that on my 1st and 2nd gen??

crzycummins 06-08-2010 09:04 PM

Damn thats sweet I would love to see that in person. I bet that rig gets after it :rocking:

Yes, but the down side is the air isn't as cold entering the turbo.

24vmatt 06-17-2010 08:59 PM

Sweet fing setup:rocking::rocking::rocking::yeah::yeah:

95taylor331 08-30-2010 12:44 AM

How do these set ups work, is it one small turbo draging up 2 big ones or 2 small ones dragging up one big one??

RAW 08-30-2010 07:39 AM

2 Big turbos feeding another turbo, I do believe.

PREDATOR 08-30-2010 10:07 AM

Well, I looks cool. Looking forward to seeing some numbers and potential issues that arise from having 3 turbos :humm:

harry22 08-30-2010 12:14 PM

dumb question.......how are the air regulators plumbed in to control waste gate and whats the advantage to doing this?:argh: trying to map it out in my head but ran into a brain fart

I think it's actually 2 smaller turbos feeding one very large turbo, but maybe it's not that huge being as it's probably more of a towing set up than anything, instant boost and smoke free performance:rocking:

Farmboy 2.0 08-30-2010 12:35 PM

Yeah you can have 2 feeding one, and you can also run them in parallel i believe
