another fire ringing/o-ring question

Yeah im in the process of buying a 2000 cummins and I want to know about how much a fire ring job would cost. if anyone knows let me know thanks.:humm:

Don't fire ring o-ring it. o-ring job runs 300 are you pulling the head yourself?

well im in the process of purchasing a new pickup and i found a 2000 cummins and yes i am probably going to pull the head unless it is very complex and how come i shouldnt get a fire or o-ring job done.

Fire rings are usually only used in competition trucks running crazy timing and nitrous. They tens to have leaky water jackets and the like. Also, compression is routinely lost to the surrounding gasket and even into the engine. Fire rings are cut into the block and the head as receiver grooves for the rings. And the fire ring in the gasket is then removed.

O-rings are cut into the head surface. A wire is inserted and this applies pressure to your gaskets fire ring. If installed correctly, they are very effective and don't have the leaky tendencys of the fire rings. Around here, O-rings are $200.

If you O-ring or fire ring, skip the stock bolts and go to studs! Do lots of retorques or you will lose the gasket.

Ok, so your telling me to get an o-ring job done and those run 200 per cylinder and yeah I was going to replace the stock head bolts with new studs.

$200 per cylinder? If that sounds like a good deal, I'll pay shipping both ways!!

It's $200 for the complete o-ringing job. Head surfacing is a little more an I have yet to have a head be completely flat. Also a great time to do a valve job and I can assure you the exhaust guides will be shot.

well shit. I thought you were saying that an o-ring job I would be payin out the ass for it but i guess not. that confused the hell out of me. but to have the head resurfaced, o-ring job, valve job, and exhaust guides done, about how much would that cost ya think?

Fishin2Deep4U 08-25-2009 01:20 AM

Just depends on how much work is needed. But I routinely see o-ringed heads go for between $500-$700 resurfaced and new guides installed. Get good guides, no knurling!!! They will still wear out due to the diameter and side loading, but I tend to favor bronze bushings.

Right on, thats not really as bad as I thought it would be and the truck only has 83,xxx some miles on it too so my guess is that the parts shouldnt be to beat up but I guess you never know.
