24v v.s 12v head
 

i got a buddy of mine who was having an overheating problem on his 99' 24v. I thought he had a blown head gasket cause we just installed twins but he didnt want head studs :argh: so we pulled the head and checked the gasket, no problems. while putting the head back on, noticed that the black had 12 yes i said 12 head cracks in it!!!! totally trash. well a diesel mechanic buddy of ours and want to put a 12v head on the 24v. can you do this? ive seen the cr 24 heads put on the reg. 24v but never seen a 12v. also, will you have to a p pump? just a wondering dog here! thanks guys

Well the only thing on this i do know is that the 12v head flows a lot less cfm's than the 24v head does. So there would be power loss. That and IDK what but something would have to be machined.

Sure you can put it on. However you will run into several problems. #1 like Coal Roller said, They flow Less air. #2 THe injectors are angled rather than centered over the bowl. So you will need new injection lines. Also the truck would be a Hot SMokey Low Power Pig.

Unless you are P-Pumping it and changing the pistons. bad idea.

every head has cracks in it. When I did my headgasket it was cracked between every valve.

24v heads are extremely prone to cracking. When I yanked my head it was fine. When we pulled the head off of another friends truck, it was cracked on every cylinder. It is fine to deck the head about .010". In many cases that will remove the cracks and bring the head back to spec as well.

Putting a 12v head on, like mentioned above doesn't work for a number of reasons. And there isn't much benefit to doing it either.

Ok here's the scoop I just converted a 12v engine to a 24v head. Only to keep the p pump. You would have to change to 12 v pistons pushrods injector lines and use the 12v exhaust manifold. Just keep the 24v head the tiny cracks you see are in the valve seats. Any good machine shop can change those for 30 bucks a piece
