Chip/Programmer
 

i have a 2002 dodge ram 3500 automatic, its stock other than bhaf, 4 inch exhaust and an airdog....i was wondering what size chip/programmer is safe to use with a stock automatic tranny.....id like to get a small chip for now until i have enough cash to buy a heavy duty tranny....whats good....thanks:U:

Well if you have the money im gonna say about 1000 bux and the mechanical know how you can get a single disc torque converter and put in a trans go shift kit and you will be good for about 500hp after that you want a billet input at least and upgraded clutches,steels,etc... Lots of people run edge, i got a few friends with quadzilla chips, check out ts performance too, or smarty, and im not sure if ppe makes something for them i think they do. I would look there too.

On a stock transmission I wouldn't run anything bigger than a Edge EZ.

Even stock trannys can and will fail with a moderate chip.

Build the entire trans. Adding pressure to a worn unit will only kill it faster. I think the 500HP claim with a TC and a transgo kit above is reaching a bit. But to each their own.

Thats just what I have been told, from various transmission guys. I dont personally run 500Hp on a single disk so I cant really tell you if it works or not. Building the entire trans is expensive... Im guessing he doesnt have the funds to do that, thats why I suggested the other route. It will get him pretty far without costing an arm and a leg. Unless he's lookin for twins, huge sticks, monster vp 44, and big power for dyno's that should suit him for a 400HP daily driver until the trans needs a rebuild. Oh yeah keep the bands adjusted on the transmission that will help prolong the life of it.

Surprisingly, I got about 45k out of mine with a drag comp, and RV275's, and it was still going pretty strong when I replaced it. I never thought it would've held that.

As far as the shift kit, and converter thing, I wouldn't trust that past about 300-350hp depending on how tight the rest of the trans was, and I would at least replace the intermediate band as well. Also, if you are even going to consider putting a lock up switch on it, or doing boosted launches I would highly recommend billet shafts. As to the original question, I wouldn't suggest running more than a timing box, but you may get lucky like I did.

Boilerdog9008- What do you want to use the truck for? There are tons of things that can be added or done to these trucks. But the important part is setting a goal from the beginning and building to that. It sucks having to go in and rebuild stuff, because you didn't build the whole truck to handle Power you are putting out. It also sucks building a high HP truck and not being able to use it for towing because of turbo selection.
