Tips and Comments for 01 Dodge

New to the site, so some of you may have seen me post the same in another thread. That said, I have an 01 Dodge 3/4 with about 108,000 miles on it. Automatice, 4x4, quad cab, and in superb condition. Recently since the diesel bug took hold, I have added the following: MBRP 4" stainless steel dual exhaust from the turbo back, Edge Juice with Attitude with pillar module control unit, ATS high rise air intake manifold, ATS 3 piece exhaust intake manifold, K&N Coldair intake, and Bosch 300hp injectors. All of which have made a HUGE impact on the performance of this truck, its smokes heavy on command, and the throttle responce is AWESOME to say the least. I had also purchased the FASS 95gph fuel pump to install, but going over the instructions noted it said that I might be missing a key part if the primary fuel pump had been moved to the tank? Any advice or tips on this? I know my injectore pump is in the stock location, but wasn't quite sure if the stock fuel pump was actually moved and if so, does it matter with adding a brand new, higher volume pump in its place? Lastly I was wanting to know if anyone had any tips or comments in referrence to making this everyday driver even better without taking away its normal operations? I want it to be bad, but I don't want it to take my wallet to keep it fueled and on the road. Thanks!

The lift pump is not in your tank its either mounted on the frame rail by the tank or right underneath your fuel filter housing, you can either leave them there or remove them but once you plug in your FASS to the wiring harness it wont send power to the stock one so it will be ok:pca1:

How do you know this? Have you personally seen his truck?

Yes, the lift pump "could" be in the tank. Thats the latest DC/dealer "fix". Are you the original owner of this truck? Any idea if any dealer has replaced the lift pump? Crawl under the truck and follow the fuel lines from the tank - if your lift pump is in the stock location it should be mounted to the lower rear of the block. Just behind and below the fuel filter. If you cant see this - then yes, you have the intank lift pump. Dodge did not mount any lift pumps to the frame.

#1 in the pic -

Did you get the full FASS with filters? If so, you should have all new fuel line as well.

If you do, in fact have the intank lift pump - here is what you need: <i>Draw Straw™ II

Call Eric at Vulcan Performance Products Home Page (he as sponsor here as well) and he will hook you up with everything you will need. Im sure most of our other sponsors could take care of you too.

BTW, KSStew welcome to dieselbombers :c: :c:

Another thing - I would HIGHLY recommend a mechanical fuel pressure guage if you dont already have one.

Hey Dr.Evil, thanks man, I actually recall looking at the injector pump when I was changing out my injectors, and thought this is odd, the dealer I bought the truck from said it had been moved. I had to release pressure on the lines to pull the old injectors, so I had cracked the lines loose at the pump as well. So sounds like I need not worry, just install the FASS. I did buy the complete, with lines and filters, so I should be straight. Any other suggestions or tips I may be in need of with the current installed items? Anything you might suggest add or remove etc, please let me know. I appreciate you and everyone else's help.....Thanks for the welcome too!

Lets get on the same page here. The pump mounted to the lower part of the block is the LIFT pump (or transfer pump). Also, the injector pump (VP-44) CANNOT be relocated (its #17 on the pic above).

I didnt really follow what you said - do you have the intank pump or not? A lot of times the dealers will leave the block mounted pump in place and install the intank retrofit. Again, you should be able to tell if the stock location is in use by the fuel lines.

The FASS install should be pretty straightforward. Some guys leave the stock fuel filter housing in place and others remove it. For some thats an issue if you live in a cold climate becuase you lose the fuel heater.

Ok sorry man:itsok: i have never heard of them putting one in the tank never ever, but i guess they do...now the frame rail thing i WAS wrong on my bad i guess i just wasnt thinking right:argh:...when did they start putting them in the tank?? Every dealer i have ever heard that has replaced the LP they just slap the same crappy stock one back on

Dr. Evil 10-11-2008 02:15 AM

A couple of years ago DC switched to the intank pump to try to fix the crappy Carter issues. The intank pumps have even been worse and put out something like 6-8 psi and only a couple of psi at WOT.

I cant believe you havent heard of the intank pump before - there has been lots of talk about this on Cummins sites in the last few years.

stkdram55 10-11-2008 02:40 AM

Nope sorry, i havent really got into this whole forum thing til this year and never really looked at Cummins websites, even just last year my brother's LP went out on his 02 and he took it to the dealership and the IP was junk and the mechanic told him he could replace the stocker or put in a FASS for him and luckily the engine was still under warranty from CUmmins so he didnt have to pay for the IP..

KSStew 10-12-2008 03:29 AM

Ok we are on the same page, and maybe I didn't sound like it, sorry. Either way I know my injection pump is in the stock location and in use, and for any other pump fuel related, I couldn't tell you off the top of my head with where I am (IRAQ). But when I bought the truck in 07, they assured me the pump had been moved to the tank location, that being said, I had forgotten that when I purchase the FASS. I was just making sure whether I needed the additional part or not, and it sounds like I still might. Im going to have to wait until I get home in April to verify this for fact. Thanks for all the help though, its truly appreciated.

If your truck has the intank pump then you will need a Draw Straw.

Dr. Evil 10-12-2008 11:19 AM

Actually, Luke, he needs the Draw Straw II:

Hey guys, I'm new to the site. I have a 02 6 speed that has injectors, cold air intake, jake brake, south bend, edge drag comp and just bought a PDR HX 40 yesterday. I'm just trying to find out if this is going to be a good turbo for my truck? A little late now but hey. I only paid $250 for it so not to bad. Any info would be great.
Thanks

Dr. Evil 10-12-2008 12:11 PM

Welcome to the site - please start your own thread, instead of posting in someone elses. Thx.

ill answer you, the hx 40 will work fine depending on the injector size. the 40 will move a bunch more air then stock and should support you with low egts up 450-500. if theres a negative, itll spool a little slower but you wont notice it much. in case you didnt, make sure you get the 4 inch downpipe for it otherwise it wont bolt up.

KSStew 10-22-2008 08:57 AM

OK well you guys helped me figure out the FASS pump situation, now I got another question for you. First, how the heck do you start a thread for starters? I cannot find nothing to lead me that way. Secondly, with the above information about add-ons to my truck, I am not considering a turbo upgrade. I have looked into the Aurora 3000, the Phat Shaft's, Bd Diesel's, and the Turbonetics brands, but still can't decide which would be most efficient for the money and practical. I don't need agressive, as this truck is an every day driver that I like to play with on the weekends, maybe drag race etc...I was told anywhere from 60-64mm is right, and need to know what in your opinions is the best turbo for the money. Also any extra parts, and any tips you feel I need would be greatly appreciated too...As always thanks alot!:argh:

Look at HTT turbos. I have their 62/13SS and I like it. Best of all, you can swap housings on it to suit your needs.

Fuel pressure gauge is a must,it's been said already, but can't be over emphasized.
