Propane

I was wondering how many people are using propane on there trucks not so much for power but more for mpg. Seen a do it yourself kit only, just wondering how well it works, or if there is any problems with running it? Also wonder where it inject it at before the turbo or at the intake horn? Also will the grid heater cause the propane to burn?

The biggest issue with propane is pre-detonation since you can't really control when it goes boom in the cylinder head. This can lead to popped head gaskets (more likely in your case given how strong the bottom end of a CTD is) or destroyed connecting rods. Also your tuning will need to take into account the additional less stable fuel and reduce timing appropriately.

Water/methanol injection would be a better choice in my opinion.

Ill look into water meth injection, how much more power and mpg will I get? Also any kits that u would recommend?

70hp, 1-3mpg, and decrease in egt by 200-300 degrees is what snow claims.

Just to clear things up, propane injection like methanol, its enhances the combustion process. A more complete burn, means more power out of the same amount of fuel. Now pre-detonation can happen with both water meth and propane. Propane has a higher ignition temp then #2, and there for needs the heat of the combusted #2 to light off, just like water/meth.

However, when the propane does light off, the flame spread is quite aggressive compared to water/meth since propane is a fuel. This quickly spikes cylinder pressures, which can lead to lifting heads and causing bottom end destruction, if you inject the incorrect ratio.

The key with propane is to inject a small amount, and more is not better. People in the past used propane like it was NO2 which is bad. My buddy runs propane on his truck, which makes in the 500's, but for a mileage/reduction of smoke, not directly as a power adder.

Here is a small article www.aera.org/ep/downloads/ep9/EPQ110_16-18.pdf

Hope this was helpful :c:

Have been looking at snow performance, looks like a good kit. also seen aem has a kit out, but couldn't find a lot of reviews on them. it will be a few months before i can get one, but was wondering if it would be worth it to save for the max mpg kit, or go with stage 2. looks like the max mpg would help a lot more while towing. and also wondering if i got a stage 2 how hard would it be to upgrade later on to the max mpg kit. anyone running any of these set ups?
