5" exhaust and still have high EGT's????

With stock turbo, 60 hp sticks, very mild grind on fuel plate slid forward, star wheel maxed, smoke screw barely moved and factory size exhaust straight piped, the EGT's on my 96 were hitting 1440 at WOT for even a short time passing or hard take off with empty truck.

I just installed 5" turbo back straight pipe and it still runs identical temps.:dang:

Is it possible that even though i am hitting 35+ lbs of boost that my factory air filter can be restricting air flow, and can that cause high EGT's?

I am thinking of tuning the afc, but I have to punch it pretty hard with low to no boost to get smoke so I wouldn't think I am over fueling.

Feeling pretty stupid at this point so, any ideas??:humm:

the stock filter is def not helping, i gained 5 lbs of boost when i changed things around. is your pyro pre or post turbo? sounds like things are just bottle necking and getting hot before your turbo.

Pre turbo, and if I floor it I can hit 40lbs, but I have read that 40+ on the stock turbo will flex the shaft:td:

35+ is about the limits of the stock charger. and if 1440* is all your seeing dont be worried. a bigger charger will cool things down a bit few hundred anyways.

1440* isnt too bad at all! Once you start seeing 1600 and above I might get a little nervous

How high can you go before damage starts to occur I thought it was around 1250 deg.

mudball_79 03-01-2012 09:48 PM

@ twinstang-I believe 1250 is the max sustainable temp according to oem specs, short spikes around 1500-1550 seem to be "generally" accepted.

My issue with my temps are that I am nowhere near the power levels I am shooting for and as mild as my mods are currently 1440 seems a little high I think with a trailer on or if I stayed floored a little longer empty it would go even higher, so far 1480 is the highest temp cause around here I run out of road bout then:w2:

Maybe I was wrong in my assuming 5" would drop my temps any. I was figuring that it would be overkill for no more mods than I have.........Perhaps I am overlooking something else that may cause high egt's on a lower power level engine???:humm:

Can anyone think of anything other than low boost or too small of exhaust that could cause these #'s or is that a normal # for mild mods and a heavy foot??

Thanks:c:

Not enough air for the fuel you have. Running a stock turbo to 40lbs of boost is well out of the effective map range. After about 32psi you are starting to super heat the air which is doing no good what so ever.

1600* sustained isnt good but ive seen spikes over 2000* for a short period of time with no ill effects.

Awesome, that's what I needed to know, I just need to find more road then and see how it does:tu:

:humm:I reckon air filter setup and turbo after TC and trans internals..........any volunteers to call my wife n inform her ?????

Thanks
