2nd gen cummins upgrades

Hey guys, I'm currently rebuilding a 1994 Dodge cummins for a daily driver. I'm looking for small realatively cheap upgrades to boost HP, but not kill the driveability. Any sugestions??

turn the starwheel all the way to the passanger side.. remove the fuel plate.. cold air intake.. exhaust... and it just depends and ho far you want to go with the hp

fuel plate, boost elbow, better air filter, chop your giant muffler and cat off, turn the star wheel. i personally would grind or buy an aftermarket fuel plate if its a daily driver truck. (personally) other than that things start costing quite a bit more money. also taking the silencer ring out of the stock turbo makes you feel alot cooler.

Thanks guys for the tips, i'm not too familiar with the 12v's. Most of my knowledge is with common rails. I'm not really sure what the starwheel is or does. I know where its located thats about it. I have a #100 fuel plate on the way. K&N cold air intake, MBRP 4" exhaust, Silencer ring MIA!! KDP kit difused. I would also like to know more about this govenor spring kit that i hear so much about, I can't really find too much about a P7100 3200 rpm spring kit. Thanks again guys!
:rocking:

turbo2332 06-27-2011 07:35 PM

the gov springs allow you to fuel past 2200-2400 RPMS stock springs defuel at that ish rpm

CumminsBomb 06-27-2011 07:37 PM

Thanks for the quick reply. Where do i find such a kit? and is it something that a guy with moderate mechanical skills can install?

turbo2332 06-27-2011 07:39 PM

i bought mine from puredieselpower.com its not super hard to do. somewhere on here there are some pictures of the procedure.

The truck also has a stock-ish auto tranny, at what point should i worry about grenading that tranny? Its on the list of things to do....but not yet! Also when should head studs be installed?

turbo2332 06-27-2011 07:43 PM

my tranny is all stock, so if you pray for mine i will pray for yours. LOL be nice to it and it will last for awhile but not ever by any stretch of the imagination. studs can be installed whenever more of an insurance thing. but you dont really need them unless you have your timing way advanced or lots of boost.

Delivery Valves and Injectors
Might as well start with the tranny so you have room to grow, or you will face the problem down the road

CumminsBomb 06-28-2011 04:16 AM

sounds like a deal turbo2332! Now all i need to now is what the starwheel does!!

turbo2332 06-28-2011 05:46 PM

as far as i know the star wheel determines when you get your fuel in relation to manifold pressure. i think please correct me if im wrong.

If you want to run your stock tranny as long as you can, then the best thing to do is buy some gauges, including a trans temp gauge. As far as the best bang for your buck performance wise, that won't immediately kill the stock tranny, is buy a set of the pacbrake 4k gov springs. I installed them into my truck, and it really woke it up. The difference between the 3k and 4ks is about 20 bucks, and the 4ks will let you fuel well beyond what you need, where as the 3ks will only truly fuel to around 2600 RPM. Your stock gov springs probably fuel to around 2000-2200, so not that much of a difference. I'd definitely save up for at least a single disc TC, and VB, I just had them installed into my truck, and between those, getting my timing bumped to 16 degrees, and the 4ks, its a night and day difference between what the truck was.

Cranking the starwheel is not that helpful. It determines the rack travel at a certain boost pressure. Its to help with turbo spool and smoke. Cranking it is just alot of peoples way of getting smoke from a stop. I run without a plate and without and afc. Its all to the driver.

Taking a stock truck and adding injectors and delievery valves on a truck is some of the worst info actually.

Do some gov. springs, you wont regret it. The 3k's make things better but 4k's are the way to fly. Do some fuel plate work what ever your choice of the umpteen thousand options there are. Timing also helps as well. Then maybe think about stepping up to some injectors. Delievery valves are funny creatures. Depending on the pump, injectors, and the truck itself will depend on what you want. A key thing to look at there is that delievery valves tend to add heat, quickly.

Most importantly though, that stock auto is killing you and you will most likely in turn kill it. It will fail at some point or another. This is just some starter help.

Thanks for the help everyone! I've definately learned alot about these 12vs in a hurry. I have plans to do the tranny ASAP, but money is tight right now cuz my wife and i just had our first child (a boy!) and i don't want to take to much money away from him. I'm looking into the 4k govenor springs. I am running guages including a tranny temp guage. Whats the danger zone tranny temp wise? I'm also looking at fuel plates. I'm going to buy an aftermarket instead of modifying mine because i'd like to keep the stock one incase i ever want to put it back in lol. So my question is whats better? from my reasearch anything from #0 to #10 are'nt the way to go with a stock auto. But #11 and up to #100 seem to be ok. If you guys were in my shoes which one would you go with? and again thanks for all the help!:rocking:
