Truely reliable 400hp towing

Hey yall I’ve done some digging around on here but I’ve gotten bits and pieces of what I’m looking for, I’m curious on what your guys opinions on what it would take to go from a stock 95 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 5.9 Cummins with the NV4500 trans. I’ve done some mods I’ve taken the #8 plate out for the time being and installed 4" turbo back exhaust with a Aero Flow muffler, my current goal is to have a 400hp truck that is extremely reliable and excellent for towing. Thanks for all the input! Great site! :jump: :c:

I'd start with headstuds for reliability, then plug your wastegate. Check your turbo it may be a wh1c mine was an I have the same pickup it sounds like. Then bump your timing to say 18*. throw in some injectors, 4k govs with exhaust springs and Dvs and you should be there I think. Then your going to have to upgrade clutches like where I'm at right now lol if you ever have your pump off do the Mack plug its a noticeable gain I just shimmed my plug an it worked great. Oh ya read up on tuning your afc also.

My turbo is a Wh1c. Ive got 60lbs springs on the exhaust side because of my exhaust brake, and a set 4k Dynomite Diesel governer springs I just have to have a sunny day to put them in. My next task is to upgrade the clutch and while I'm in upgrade to the larger input shaft and fix the fifth gear nut issue. Any ideas on upgrading the turbo to keep egt down?

62/68-12

If you plan on stopping at 400hp, I would go 5x12s, SuperB(57/65/14), 3 GSK, #100 with a tuned AFC. The B will spool really quick with this combo and has a 14cm exhaust housing to keep it cool while towing.

If you think you may want a little more power, then a 62/65, 62/68 or 63/68 may be best for you.

Don't forget a DD and a big input shaft.

Twins - if you want to use all the power towing, either heavy or in the mountains.

5.9sledhead 04-03-2011 08:56 PM

Oh not a horse power gain but do 5th gear while your there mine fell off what a pain in the ass for an easy fix lol. I'd say twin turbos just cause its fun to brag that you have one more than most lol

95.12v.Cummins 04-03-2011 11:52 PM

What twins would you guys recomend? Dont just throw up numbers.lol. When I do my upgraded input shaft and clutch I'll do the fifth gear nut fix. Im just starting to dig into clutchs, any advice on what would be a good clutch?

Industrial Injections or BD's Towing Twins will work great....

make your own kit there easy the HX35 over HT3b seem to be super popular for towing and DDing

How would a Wh1c work over a HT3b? Just curious.

Whats the best turbo/twins to use with my BD exhaust brake?

95.12v.Cummins 04-08-2011 11:26 PM

Or is using the BD exhaust brake(turbo mounted) not possable with the twin set up?

madmikeismad 04-11-2011 04:25 AM

For 400hp, don't do twins. Keep it as simple as possible with a single. If you decide to go twins, keep them small.
3k GSK
You don't need studs, but tightening the head bolts or new over-tightened allen bolts would work great
better clutch (valair or southbend. talk to both and go with who you like best)
Maybe injectors. Get a good set from SDX or Contagious.
You don't need DV's unless you want more EGT's
Last, pull the plate and tune the AFC

You should be at least a fast spooling 400hp with this.

95.12v.Cummins 04-23-2011 08:11 PM

What single turbo would you be able to run with the BD exhaust brake? Or upgrade my Wh1c?

big bad diesel 416 04-24-2011 12:03 AM

if you have the same E-Brake as I do its a 3in V-Band so any turbo that uses a 3IN V-Band out let it will work I am building the BBD Twin kit and am making a sweet little adapter that will go from 4 or 5 in V-Band to that little 3in brake then back out to 4 or or 5in exhaust some will call that point less but hey I love my brake and I am too cheep to buy a 4 or 5in inline lol

EasternAggie 04-25-2011 10:04 PM

I would say 5x.012's with either a 62/68/12-14 or a small set of twins using a stocker with a HT3B

Im the same way, when I got my Dodge I paid 5k for it and the brake came with it so in my mind I have a free exhaust brake. I absolutly love it and like you I am to cheap to buy the larger one.lol
