Bad Day To Be A Cummins

My truck ran into some problems on a trip from Idaho to North Dakota. I was on my way to ND when I suddenly, and without any noise or issue, lost 5th gear. Just cruising and suddenly the RPM's jumped up. I grabbed 4th and kept driving. I drove another 800 miles home and when I got home I noticed I had oil all over the back of my tailgate. I brought the truck in to have 5th gear welded back on and told them to figure out the oil leak as well. Turns out old Mr. Dowel Pin backed out and cracked my timing case for me. Fortunately it didn't take out any of the gears. So on one hunting trip, I lost 5th gear, cracked my timing case, and broke a vacume line causing cruise control to stop working. All in all not a good day.
Any idea what I can expect to pay for all this to get straitened out.

anyone have a good source for a timing gear case and what the price might be

RedRammer 11-07-2007 10:37 PM

It cost me something like $600 at the dealer to have a new 5th gear installed after mine worked its way back.

i think your best bet is cummins for the new case it was like 194 I think or somewhere around there if you are able to do it yourself I would say do that it will be cheaper not sure how much a shop would cost though. good luck man.

I feel sorry for you to an extent. All Doidge diesel sites oIve been to talk about these two issues extensively. And they should have been taken care of (at least the KDP).

I guess this can be a lesson for anyone with a 12V or early 24V - make sure you tab that dowel pin !!!!! I know I slept better after mine was done.

I hope you can get it fixed reasonably cheap erik - good luck man.

PS, where in Idaho are you?

Thats just for the cover...if the timing case is broke its something like $800, iirc. All depends on what route the pin decided to take. Hopefully it didnt booger the gear up.

toy4xchris 11-07-2007 11:22 PM

if he puts the new case from cummins in they redesigned it and no more tab issues.

Dr. Evil 11-07-2007 11:25 PM

I would STILL tab it.

toy4xchris 11-07-2007 11:28 PM

where the kdp goes it extends out so you would have to make your own and the have a lil I guess you could call it a ring that is supposed to keep it in I thought about tabbing mine but it looks like it will hold.

NukleusX 11-07-2007 11:31 PM

Now you guys got me all jittery since I dont know if mine is tabbed or not, and I am about to go on a ~2500 mile trip in my truck with 274k miles on the odo.... Perhaps I should pull out some tools and git r done this weekend.. Or get on my knees and pray hard! AHHHH

toy4xchris 11-07-2007 11:34 PM

its one of those if it does it does things man but I would or if you want we can do that here if it lasts lol but I would get it doesnt take long or cost much.

NukleusX 11-07-2007 11:40 PM

You know, I dont think that is a half bad idea. I mean yeah I am running a gamble on doing the drive without fixing it, though I do not have the part to tab it, and I really dont have anywhere to do the operation before i move-

Dr. Evil 11-07-2007 11:41 PM

It would make for a long trip if she drops but odds are reasonable that you will make it home..

toy4xchris 11-07-2007 11:45 PM

if you want I will get the tab and have it waiting here for ya

NukleusX 11-08-2007 12:05 AM

that sounds good.... then we can get her fixed or whatnot when i stop by, ya never know, i still have to drive through LA county before I get home. lol lol

Wanna feel better?

I paid 3,300+ bucks for the repair, where 1,200 were for the case only! - Of course, this was in Germany, hence every piddly part needed to be ordered and shipped from the US, and shipping cost, VAT and customs fees were a significant chunk of cost.

Good luck for a cheap repair
and greeting from Germany,
Tom

man that sucks I would have lost my mind over that one.

If you need to pinch pennies, I think Ebay would be your best bet on parts. There is a guy in Arkansas that takes in wrecked trucks and tears them down to the bare block. I am sure he will have the timing case and cover in his warehouse. I think his Username is Redliner or something to that effect.

Sorry to hear about your luck, but at least it happened at once, and not like 2 weeks apart. That would have really ticked you off.:argh:

NukleusX 11-08-2007 06:35 PM

Hey Jason, if you havnt already, check the KDP on the 90 I sold you, I never tabbed it when I owned it-

The first time the dealer put the screws to me for 1000.00 the second time I fixed myself w/a welder hopefully it will not happen again in the tranny.:argh:

Hey i Saw this pop back up so i thought i would chime in and tell you what i ended up paying.
I had the work done at a local diesel performance shop. I had the timing cover replaced, the timing set to 16.5 degrees, a cruise control vacume line replaced and 5th gear welded back on. He charged me $900. I thought that was a decent deal, what do you think?

LOGANSTANFORTH 12-06-2007 07:58 PM

thats a great price, you didnt get hurt at all, thats actually really cheap, considering the shop where im from charges almost 1000 just to do the cover.......
