need some advice.. injectors what kind do i need?

alright everyone im doing a senior project and i wanted to do something i could get a credit for and enjoy long after im out of school. im very intrested in learning more about mechanics im not just here to see smoke like most kids are. so far ive got #100 plate, intake, exhaust, starwheel, and clamped wastegate. only downfall is this truck has 220000 on it and original tranny. im going to be hauling a pretty good size boat this next year and was wondering if i should get injectors?? if so what kind?? i dont want to break the bank either. its either injectors or gauges i know i should already have the gauges but dont which do yall think i need most?? or should i just start saving my money for a built tranny???

12vcummins96 09-13-2010 04:08 PM

guages then tranny then injectors imo

TN12valve 09-13-2010 04:23 PM

thanks but with the gauges n built tranny how many hp sticks should i get? what about marine injectors are they worth it or should i save n get some name brand stuff

Red_Rattler 09-13-2010 04:50 PM

If you add sticks to the mix you have going on now you'll def kill the tranny towing the boat. Also marine injectors are not the way to go, all they give you is hot dirty somewhat cheap power. A set of 5x.014 from Southern Diesel Extreme (sponsor on the site) makes very nice correct spray pattern for the 12v at a very reasonable price. But I agree gauges tranny then sticks. Make it reliable first then add the power.

blazier18 09-14-2010 03:39 AM

96cummins is right. imo its better to buy once then keep replacin stuff and buildin a tranny can be as much as u want the liffle mods u have done and with injectors a double disc torque converter will do that and injectors. but get ur gauges before u put sticks in. dont get no marine 370's they have a 155 spray angle ur lookin for a 145. i just bought a new set today extrude honed 150's i haul everyday. stock tranny lol im buildin a standard though. but 90 hp should be enough for u but private message me or text 865 659 0466 ill explain a little more

is your senior project your truck? where are you located? someone may be close to help

sstockton 09-14-2010 01:24 PM

I would run Gauges, the trans, and a set of 215hp injectors. With the right pump tuning, it is no problem to max out your stock charger with a set of 215hp sticks. From there I would start looking at what you really want to get out of the truck, power and purpose wise, and come up with a plan from there, and start by addressing the supporting mods first. Studs, O-rings, what components your trans needs etc... Then what you will need as far as air and fuel and tuning to get your truck where you want it.

oh and yes its my truck i plan to keep it forever. my dad bought it brand new back in 96 he was one of the most well thought of mechanics around. he kept this truck completly stock we pulled a 5th wheel for a good while with it and boat. he passed back in Feb. so in his memory i plan to fix it up and keep it forever i have a note pad he kept of every oil change and maintnence he ever did to it since 96 and i know how he took care of it and i plan to do the same. once i settle down n get a steady job it will become a weekend ride to keep some miles off it until i can buy another cummins!! haha

Napa WTF?

I don't know what they quoted ya brand wise but that is high

I have auto-meters and Isspro the best out there IMO for about $130 less than that

and as said above do your gauges and tranny first save big for the tranny there pricey

and with a stock turbo 90HP maybe 140HP Injectors is all you can get without getting REAL hot

for injectors go with SDX hands down there the best and there cheap.

big willy 09-16-2010 10:12 AM

TN12valve 09-16-2010 12:06 PM

crzycummins 09-16-2010 12:07 PM

thats a good thing to do for your dads old truck! take good care by getting gauges first. then the tranny and injectors. good luck with your project:tu:

big willy 09-16-2010 04:47 PM

autometer and isspro gauges are the two top of the line gauges it just depends really on which one you want

and it's like ram said any help you might need don't think twice about asking me either since im only 15 minutes from spring hill and i'd be more than glad to help you with whatever.

TN12 your name wouldn't happen to be dean would it? cus this sounds like one of my long time friends boyfriends that i just recently met

ltr450 09-16-2010 05:36 PM

if you looking to do a cheap mod for school project do the afc mods no money need just a grinder.
here is the link
afc mods (lots of pics) - DieselRam.com

TN12valve 09-16-2010 08:13 PM

big willy!!haha yeah im dean good to hear from ya man i wouldnt of ever thought i woulda found you on here! what other mods have you done to your truck since i met you? we need to get together sometime you lindsey n me for dinner or to work on our trucks and to crzycummins thanks i appreciate it i intend to drive it till the wheels fall off!! but i wont let it get in that bada shape! to ltr450 i hear so much about it but dont understand the whole afc deal i didnt know you could adjust it isnt that where your starwheel is cuz ive cranked that to the max n put a 100 fuel plate in slid ff.

ltr450 09-16-2010 09:48 PM

i wouldn't just roll the star wheel ahead that does nothing by kill your boost spool up. i put the link up follow that grind the cuped washer flat grind afc foot 1/4 to 1/8 than adjust your star wheel and check it with the air compressor for the amount of boost your truck is putting out. this afc mod will let the rack travel farther and you will get more fuel and will add like 30hp. i had the same set up you did 100fp and star wheel max out. my truck is a 5speed work alright just driving around. but try starting out at the bottom of a hill with a 35foot camper behind you you will find out real quick what happens take for ever for the turbo to light. now my set up is no fuel plate and afc mods 330 marnie injectors and my truck only smokes now when i get on it hard and it has alot more power and turbo lights way quicker.

big willy 09-16-2010 10:39 PM

lol wow i never woulda expected you on here either and i still got everything the same as it was when we talked. yeah we all do need to get together i see lindsey almost everyday since we got class together. and i can help you with that afc mod whenever you feel like messing with it i know it all seems like it's really confusing but once you actually get into it and messing with it it's a lot easier than you think

i bet lindsey is going to get a kick out of this when she finds out too

TN12valve 09-19-2010 12:18 PM

alright man thanks, yeah she will i told her the other night on the phone she just laughed but yeah i think i would like to learn how sometime 30 horses sounds good to me

big willy 09-20-2010 11:49 PM

yeah it hauls my ass down the quarter.... and the 12 broken trans were before drag racing... its just a power issue... but this coming year i will be running the 12.0 index class with my ol 12 valve... its so much fun to break the seat in your truck from slamming back so hard on a launch
