washer shim trick in governor

yep i did this mod and somehow something went bad wrong.it is blowing a god awful amount of white smoke.and won't hardley start.a local cummins pro here said he couldn't see how i did it.he seems to think that my timing has somehow slipped.help please!!!!:humm::humm::argh::argh:

So what did you do? I've never heard of this "mod"

BAD ASS RAM 08-13-2010 09:20 PM

you take a washer of certain size and put it under the retainer against the spring that limits the top end.it just has to be able to clear the outer idle spring

lodal cummins 08-13-2010 09:58 PM

so your are saying you shimed your stock springs for better tension, right? i have heard of this but much better to get the right new springs. i would take it apart and put new springs in. if that does not correct the problem i would check timing or could be a bad injector. white smoke usually means raw fuel. hope this helps keep us posted!!!::tu:

what happens is this, and i speak from experience.

if the washer is not seated correctly the nut and top spring seat will not go all the way back to where it needs to go. doing this will allow it to catch parts in the pump. in my case it bound the springs in the inspection hole, bent the governor assembly, broke it and spun the timing gear on the injection pump shaft.

so, my suggestion is remove the washers, pay someone to advance your timing, pay $95 or however much vendors are charging now days for the 3K GSK and know it is done right.

the "free GSK" trick i installed on that friends truck cost me ~$1700 when it was all said and done.....

ouch yeah i agree do it right the first time

toy4xchris 08-13-2010 11:39 PM

I know when I fell for the free gsk idea i ended up having shifting issues in my auto trans caused me to think something was wrong with my goerend parts so needless to say i got a good lecture about how dumb I was and ended up doing it right thankfully that's all the issues I had.

can i take the afc off so i can get a better look at whats goin on in there or can i still not see it that way?

lodal cummins 08-14-2010 10:57 AM

yes take the afc off for a better look. take those shims out and get the right spring kit. if the truck ran fine before this i would say that the home made shim is not the winning ticket. hope you did not bend anything:ouch:

BAD ASS RAM 08-14-2010 11:24 AM

could the shim make it do that or is the timing slip more probable????
