Timing advice...
 

im wondering what the most timing i could run on my truck. i currently have a 97 12v with coaltrain 5x.014 injectors, scheid lcdv's, columbus diesel 5k gsk's, plate and afc less. has new +.020" over headgasket, and new stock headbolts torqued to 135... it is currently set at 16* but i was wanting more, just not sure what is too much.

I've got 17.5 on my stock bolts with 135 ft lbs on them right now, but I'm pushing quite a bit less air. It did 5 dyno runs and no problems so far.

I should add I didn't drop a valve, pulled the pin out and lined up the holes. I was actually shooting for 16ish but I'm pretty sure I'm closer to 17.5, 18 on the high side.

When advancing your injection cycle. take note when you take off the head next time. If you see the spray pattern on your pistons. You might want to look into a different set of pistons with a e bowl design that works with the extra advancement. That way your able to burn more efficiently.

when you installed the +.020 headgasket did you use stock injector washers or the thin ones? you may be higher than 16* already

my buddy has 23.5* on stock headbolts and gaskets.never retorqued bolts or anything. 6k later still running great. and he beats the piss out of it

i used whatever came with the coaltrain injectors for the washers.

I also forgot to mention i have a sps66 turbo and high-rise injection lines which are the same i.d. as stock lines just about 4-5 inches longer so im not sure what that would do to the timing.

the washers are prob the regular thickness, you should install a set of the thin washers.

ok well where would one get these thinner washers? and how thin do i need to go?

is like 18-19* too much?

thats where I bought mine from, use the thinnest ones in the set.

I think you would be alright at 18* .. but I have never ran new head bolts

Longer injector lines are also going to delay the timing event,just as a set of over size lines would.How much the longer lines would change the timing is anyones guess and it could only be figured out by timing the truck with the timing light pulse adapter or spill port timing the pump.
