Need advice on setting up a 96' for Towing

1 Attachment(s)
So I got a 1996 2x4 Dually That I need to set up for towing about 18K pounds through the Rocky Mountains. I dont want to run compound turbos or three hundrd horse sticks, I just want to be able to maintain the same speed at the top of the pass as I Started with at the bottom, still have a reliable truck, and maybe have some fun when empty:bat:

So specs on truck are a 1996 2wd Dually, BONE STOCK:argh:, ext cab Auto, not sure what P Pump I have, 200k miles still runs strong.

if its an auto its a 180hp
manual its a 215hp
for towing a 62/65/12
and a set of 5x.012 would fit the bill:c:

18k, mountains, and more power is very hard on the trans. That is where you should start

NadirPoint 05-28-2010 06:00 AM

Water/meth to keep it cool on the long grades.

I agree with 94 12valve! Trans is a must!

If I aint going for monster power, is a billet input shaft needed, and I would guess the trans would need to be set up differant than my o7'. any ideas as far as the trans set up

Why is everyone worried about the trans if you're not going for alot more power?

EGT is the biggest issue towing in the mountains. You don't need more than 300hp anyway. Braking, stopping and keeping the heat under control are the big issues. I'd also recommend an exhaust brake.

because the stock autos really do suck, If he wants to tow 18k and maintain his speed up the hill that is gonna require some hp. It is also going to put a lot of stress and heat on his trans.

go with the trans first, at least a convertor and bigger cooler, a good valve body wouldnt be bad either, the transmission is a great tranny u just got to get rid of the week link, the tc is the best place to start, if your going to get a triple disk make sure you get a billet flex plate

idk if anyone said get some gauges but i would also put those in to keep an eye on things

I would suggest an exhaust brake - but youll need a billet input shaft and a controller
