PUMP TIMING?

I recently made a mistake and allowed a friend of mine to take the redneck rig into his diesel mechanic class as a project, in order to replace the gear housing which was cracked by the KDP. It's all a long story, a 16 hour job has taken over 3 weeks.
He had it started and idling for about 10 minutes today and when he went to test drive it, never made it out of the parking lot. Here are the mods that were made while he was in this process: 60 lb. Valve Springs, 4k GSK kit, Advancing the timing to 16*. I don't believe that the governor springs would cause a it to quit, my belief is he didn't get the nut torqued properly on the pump shaft and the timing slipped. He said there was some WHITE smoke but not a significant amount. Any help here would be appreciated.:argh::argh::argh::s:

I've got that link handy, and sent it to him so him and his instructor can go over it again tomorrow. He gets 1 more shot at it, and then it's going to a local shop. Also could you tell me what torque needs to be on the nut, I believe I've seen 122 to 155 ft. lbs.

i torqued mine to 150lbs

book says 144 ft/lbs ... I take mine to 150 then a final time to 155.

Here is a tip, clean the shaft with contact cleaner before you reinstall the gear.

I'm going to give him that info in the morning before they get everything back together. I'm about to take a day off of work to go ad straighten the instructor and student out on this whole deal. So much for not having enough time to do this myself, 3 full weeks, I probably could have found an hour or 2 a day plus weekends.

my kit said 180ftlbs. and this just happened to my buddy, had the truck in the shop and drove it one mile and died, just slipped timing

3 weeks is crazy, timing is only an hour job:argh:

It has been 3 weeks for the gear housing, valve springs, and everything. The problem is the instructor made him pull the s.o.b. out of the truck in order to change the gear housing. That took the most time. I tried to explain to this kid and the instructor it's unnecessary to pull the motor out in order to pull the cam shaft out and change the gear housing. On the upside I had him put a new clutch in and radiator and some other stuff I had no intentions of changing at this time. I'll keep everyone posted on the status if the Redneck Gal gets fired today.

I torqued mine to 180. It seems like a lot but when your turning it it still feels solid.
