The timing is adjusted by backing the nut off the timing gear and moving the gear on the taper shaft of the injection pump. You'll need a timing tool, which is a gauge dial indicator that measures the TDC of the No1 plunger in respect to the TDC of the No1 cylinder...or at least that's how I understand it. I ordered a Snap-On timing tool kit from PureDieselPower.com. They aren't cheap, but it's a must for P-pump owners who like to tweak things.

You dont move the pump gear, you need the tools like stated in the last thread and adusting the pump to where you want your timing, then put the gear back on, while leaving the motor on CTD.

If you are going to pull the front cover for a KDP then the easiest way to do your timing is then. You need the tool. Set your motor at TDC with the timing pin. Now pull the cover and the pump gear. You can then GENTLY bottom out your nut (or, we have an extra nut so we can double nut the shaft) and rotate the pump slowly to the desired lift for the timing position you want. Do your KDP, verify you are still TDC, verify pump lift is where you want it, then reinstall the pump gear. DONE!

Thrust washers really help you out here also.
