Silencer ring
i pulled my silencer ring out yesterday and couldnt hear the turbo at all. with it in u can really hear it whisle it sounds like its in the glovebox. thought it was suposed to make the whisle louder without it?
it does specialy if you have a air intake
mine whistles like hell
ya my stock turbo whistled like hell after i pulled the ring when i added the AFE intake is when it really made a differance
Sounds like you need a different air intake. I have an aftermarket on mine, and it really screams without that silencer ring. How choked up is your filter? Just an observation also, I hear a lot more screaming out of my turbo below 10psi than at higher boost. Of course that could be due to some rather annoying high freq. hearing loss I have...
the filter is clean. it completly took the whisle away when i took the ring out. no matter much or little boost there was no whistle without it. with the ring its louder than hell
sorry to say it but you have an f-ed up turbo then:humm:
^Yep something is definitely messed up.
What kind of boost are you seeing?
:humm:
the turbo is fine ive had it checked out. i dont know what im running for boost.... dont have my boost gauge hooked up yet
i took my ring out and im running an open turbo and the turbo is almost all you hear

sure its the silencer ring you took off lol jk
lol yea smart:ouch:
i guess my question is y is it doing the opposite on my truck?
seems like yours is the only one? as stated before, are you sure its the silencer ring your messing around with? my '05 and my '97 both are super loud with BHAF's and no silencer ring. Sound like your either doing something wrong (no offense) or something is wrong with your turbo.
have to agree 100%
:humm:
im sure its the silencer ring im taking out. i followed the post on here with pics down to a t. if someone would like to explain where the ring is so i can double check thatd be great
when you pull your intake tube off, and you see your impeller wheel, its the steel ring that surrounds that. it is held in by a snap ring. it is slightly curved into the impeller wheel to smooth out airflow and reduce noise.
thats what i took out. ill take it out again tonight and see what happens. i just dont get y its doing the opposite
i would guess that its spinning fast enough to be a high enough pitch that you just cant hear it over the truck itself. when i get into higher rpms my turbo gets to where you cant hardly hear it. the open turbo is just till i get new one. when i get something nice i will put a filter on it. just trying to enjoy it while running the stocker, besides a few guys down here are running open turbos and still doing fine. so far i have 20,000 miles on the open turbo and no problems with end play or bearing wear...
just a bunch of dust and dirt in your engine oil, right?nothing to be worried about, turbos OK!:argh:
even at idle and low rpm i cant hear the turbo at all when the ring is out
PUT A BOOST GUAGE ON IT !
Maybe youre going deaf?? :w2: :w2: |
i cant hear my big one at idle eather just threw the exhaust, mine is loudest at 15-20psi
i took it back out tonight and now its unbelievably loud. i thought it sounded good b4 but thats nothing compaired to now. i dont know y its loud now and wasnt the last time i took it out....
