Timing for towing???

What timing advance is best for heavy towing.

With my 4k GSK it is a bit touchy already... just a touch of the throttle advances it through each gear to full RPM without "gassing" it. You have to get used to it. I wouldn't want a stranger driving it...

I want to advance the timing... I'm considering 15*° or 15.5°

What is the physical effect of advancing the timing other than "more power"?
Will it make the throttle more touchy?

I'm not trying to snap a weak link - I just like the power when towing empty or if I need to GO. :-laf

timing advance will not make your throttle more touchy what it does do is it injects the fuel earlier in the stroke so that it will burn more fully. you can advance the timing up to around 17-17.5 safely anymore than that and you run the risk of blowing the headgasket.

I would stick with 17*

17°?

Wow... Glad I asked...:choochoo:

Good to know it won't amplify my touchy throttle.

What about losing low end power? For towing I wouldn't want to loose my low rpm torque too much.

You know the word has always been 15.5° safely... is 17° the new discovery at stock bolts and gasket?

timing will not cause a loss in power anywhere you will only gain more power and fuel mileage it will also reduce smoke some since the fuel has more ime to mix properly with the air and yes 17* will be fine just make sure your head bolts are torqued correctly it would also be a good idea to re torque every 10000miles after timing is bumped up.

if im not mistaken 14.5 or 15 was stock timing on 215 hp engines.

15.5 is stock on a 215 pump

Okay... number one - can you post a large photo of under your hood? That looks great!

So what tools do I need again to do my timing... I have the write ups but am feeling a Vodka & Cranberry laziness right now.:ok1:

I want to do this next week when the Fam is out of town and want to be sure to have the SPECIAL TOOLS... I have all of the normal tools - and then some!:5:

Where did you get your tools to advance the timing?

stock on a 215 is 14 - 14.5* and the more timing you run you will lose some low end power
