Best Mileage And Perfomance Help

97 cummins 4x4 3500 was planning on getting it straihgt piped this week and cold air intake then i got on this site .i live in C.S.C.O.6500ft I drive everyday haul qauds 2500lb and boat hope to get camper want cheap stuff adjustments shoud i get the 4inch pipe is it possible to get some power and milage it is auto with 410s i have a light foot:tttt:

cold air intake and a 4" turbo to tailpipe would be real good for ya

the 410 gears is killin ya...............my suggestion there would be to get some 35" tires to offset the low gears

advance yer timing to about 15* and move the fuel plate forward all put 1/4"

get a EGT gauge

what kind of power would i get ,and do u mean all the way forward and a 1/4 back and what does that gauge stand for or do and how much .if i want to straight pipe 3 or 4 thanks for the help

I would go with the BHAF, moving the plate all the way forward then back 1/4, 15* timing, and at least a 4" turbo back exhaust just like Whitmore said. If you go with a #10 fuel plate I believe they are rated around 330hp and 750ftlbs torque. Just be sure you dont go too crazy or you will be asking for trouble from your transmission.

Oh and EGT gauge or pyrometer is your exhaust gas temperature .. pretty important.

to kbaily and whitmore i was going to straight pipe the stock 3 but i stopped at a few shops they seem to think 3 to 4inch is a huge differance . How do you adjust timing? I have heard you dont want any metal on air intake because of heat

If you want to build horsepower and torque over stock numbers the 3" pipe will restrict flow and raise your egt's. If you want the actual volume difference 1' of 3" pipe has a volume of 7.068 cuft and 1' of 4" pipe has a volume of 12.566 cuft. With the larger pipe you will run cooler, build better power, and your turbo will spool much faster. As far as the adjusting the timing ... I dont like digging around inside the guts of the injection pump so at least for me it is something best left for a professional diesel mechanic. If you want to attempt it yourself I attached a set of instructions.

Also, I dont understand what you are saying about 'dont want any metal on air intake because of heat'

shops are telling me that it gets heat soaked with the engine heat. do you think the bhaf flows as good as the name brands or close i have a k/n in stock box now

kbailey 06-02-2008 10:01 PM

a BHAF has a lot more surface area than a stock filter or any high flow drop in and will flow very well. I believe the BHAF is actually for medium duty truck engines so it should easily handle the requirements of a 5.9. A lot of people dont have anything good to say about K&N filters especially when it comes to diesel. If you want to do a cold air intake other than just a BHAF with a heat shield I would go with an Icebox or some of the site sponsors can lead you in the right direction.

I still dont get what you are talking about with the intake and heat sinc. Are you talking about the intake horn or the turbocharged air or what?

jamiewarner64 06-02-2008 10:24 PM

when they connect filter to turbo with metal

kbailey 06-03-2008 06:27 AM

like a chromed tube? I dont think it should matter. Any effect it would have should be minimal since the air is still going to go through the intercooler.
