Looking for turbo opinions

I'm looking to upgrade to a bigger turbo soon. My mods are as follows, air dog 2, benched 180 p-pump, full cut dv's, 370 injectors, #0 plate. Rack plug, ii .120 holders, oversized fuel lines, intake manifold, water meth.
I'm running an hx40 now, I was looking at the super b special 64/71/14 but I don't know if it's the right choice. I don't really want to make a bad choice here. A few people told me to run a phatshaft 64 with a 12cm exhaust housing but I'm afraid that with get too hot. Any help would be great guys. Oh and it's my daily driver and race truck.

well your tuning is far from disirable. you need a plate and get rid of those full cuts and crappy injectors. BUT to the turbo... a special is a very fine choice for a mild street truck. tuned right 600hp is doable. a 71mm turbine is kinda lazy but wont act much different than your 40. it will surge if you tow but it will be managable. i would abolutly go with the 14cm housing in this case.

what did your benched 180 pump flow?

The pump benched a hair over 500cc.
So do you think the super b special would laggy? Is there a turbo that would better suite?
I haven't had any problems with my 5x12's. I might be upgrading to 5x14's down the road.

i run 5x14's and a 62/71/13 switched from a set of 5x12's and a 62/65/14 DD driving is noticably different. very controlable but is harder to drive like a truck now. probably 2-300 rpms slower to start spooling more smoke. very drivale but different. depends on what you want. im not out to break dynos or lift heads so i stick with a smaller compressor. perfectly capable. I expect the truck to dyno this spring in the low 500's with a #6 fuel plate. Build your engine around your biggest power adder. the turbo. so choose what you want then match everything to its cababilities and it will run like a top. people get all fuel happy or want a massive turbo or 2 of them and wonder why the thing is slow.

I promise

.120 injection lines
full cuts
marine 370's
and no fuel plate = a truck that my geo can out run

Hmm how hot does your 62/71/13 get?
I was young an dump when I first started building the truck but I'm slowly getting it straightened out. I ran it down the track at the east coast diesel nationals last summer and it ran a 14.7 it's not the fastest but I'd like it to be a little better. So your thinking the super b special would be ok?

maybe 1400* if i beat the hell out of it. short bursts in the 1100-1200* range.
cruzing 600*
gental incline at speed with a trailer 900* ish
regular acceleration from a stop 900*

and yes i do. it is a good size s300 for desent hp and desent Daily Driving. not the best at either but does them both well. are your 5x12's cheapie knock off marine injectors or are they 145* correct spray pattern nozzles?

dieseldemon61 03-21-2014 08:50 PM

Ok those numbers aren't as bad as I thought they would be

I had them done from JL Machining before the owner passed away, they told me they would have the correct spray pattern.

ide just stick with the 5x12's then for right now. they are perfectly capable of fueling a turbo of this size. my old 62/65 would get to 15-1600* on a long WOT run for comparison.

Ok thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
