Knock, knock......injector, valve, piston, what else??????
This is what was done to it during the build.
-New injectors 5x.016 dual feed made by JL Machine w/ 145 degree spray angle -188/220 Hamilton cam -24 valve tappets -Mild head work by Hamilton cams. Valve job mild port and polish. Installed HD springs by Hamilton -HD push rods by Hamilton -stock head gasket -tabbed KDP -No previous block work done and Hamilton assured the head didnt have enough taken off to have the cam interfere w/ anything. Any ideas of the issue based on the video below? Listened to a few youtube videos on injector knock and it sounded similar. Others have said possible timing off, but I have checked that. Currently timed at 18 degrees and both timing pins line up. Thanks for any input. Listen to video. bradaneal2020's Library | Photobucket |
Link didnt work. So your stock timing is 18*?

See if that works Yes, the timing is set t 18 degrees from pump shop. All timing pins line up. |
ddnt work either, im on a dinosaur computer tho. Ok timing makes sense, kinda hard to screw that up then. haha Has bottom end been untouched? Have you traced noise down to a certain cylinder? whats valve lash set at?
Bottom end has not been touched as far as I know. I just bought the truck Dec 2011 with 280k on it. It was all stock when I got it and when we opened the top end up nothing appeared "messed" with.
I used the stethoscope and couldn't pin it down to a certain cylinder. Injector fuel line nuts seems to be loudest areas. All of them had same sound though. Valve lash set at 10 and 20 per alldata and Hamilton Cam instructions. |
have you tried cracking the nuts one by one with engine running and see if it clears up on a certain cylinder? I got vid to work, how long did it run before it started that or was it instant?
hmm, I would crack open injection lines to start simple to see if its a fuel knock. But like miller said can you trace it to a certain spot.
Cracked injector side one at a time. Injector 6 seemed to not clear out as easily as the others but did finally seems ok. No less of a knock though. Also cracked at injection pump side and they were all good.
The ones that cleared out would indicate the prob. cylinders. if all cleared out would have to think its injector related.

I got the vid to work, Did you run the engine for a bit before it started knocking or was it knocking soon as you started it?

---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Ok, sorry for adding it so many times. Just trying different ways to see if it would work. Immediate knock. Little hard to start. Wants to die if you give it any fuel past idle. If you give it quick fuel it will die. Light/easy fuel it will stay running |
what is your supply side fuel press?
39-40 psi
If you had your stock injectors laying around you could try swapping those in and see what happens. Kinda wondering if its a pump prob tho.
Ran pump on truck prior to this upgrade and all went well. I do have the stock injectors at the house. Ill be bringing them to the shop on Monday for a possible change to see if that's it.
I also have a guy coming from Cummins to give his opinion on Monday afternoon. At a stand-still til then. Don't want to "f" anything up or tear anything apart til after he looks at it. |
Sounds good man, just wondered if maybe it could be a gov prob or the pump not supplying enough fuel for those injectors.
One other thing I did was remove the laser cut DV and put stock back in to see what happened. It did change the knocking a "little". Slight change in sound. Which makes me thing fuel related....
I would think with those injectors youd need to be moving alot of fuel through your pump.
when the cam was installed was it degreed in? a few years ago when I ran 5x16's the truck developed a fuel knock at idle ... but when you reved it up it instantly went away.
The can was pressed by a machine shop and keyed. When I installed, I lined up timing marks. Is that not correct?
When you degree it in, it ensures the valve events are happening at the correct time. There are offset keys that can be used to properly time the cam to spec.
ISNT 40 psi a little to much though? I would think no more than 25 but thats also VP44. I know if you give the pump to much pressure it will have ideling issues.

Had this pump prior to these issues. No problem with start up before this. Only time I ever had start up issues was when my lift pump was going out. Oh, and a leaky fuel line once. |
40 psi is great for a p pump will not hurt it at all
