Slow Spool Question

Looking for something to help spool my turbo. I dont have a big turbo 66/68/14 with race trim and batmo wheel. The thing takes a good bit to spool and i have never had the wastegate open which is set at 48 pounds. I figured with everything in my sig fuel wise it should light a bit quicker. I dont know what my fuel pressure is but would an aftermarket fuel pump make a big difference. Was thinking about a little shot of Nitrous to help spool the turbo. The only issue with that is i am moving to Missouri and would like to enter a few pulls. I dont know the rules about the classes and Nitrous up there.

You need to know what your fuel pressure is first. The 2nd gen lift pump upgrade worked fine on my 1st gen, but you may want an aftermarket pump for future mods of your current pump is failing. I know that my airdog 150 on the 99 will not go below 15psi with both programmers maxed and an HX40 turbo. I only have the +40hp injectors though. It's cheap insurance for your pump too...

First off thanks for the help. I understand i need to know what my fuel pressure is. A fuel pump is also in the near future. Would this help my turbo spool up better or is there something else that would help. I am just wanting to know what the best plan of attack would be to help the turbo spool. Looking into what my best option would be or should i be checking for something to fix. I just figured i have plenty of fuel for the turbo and the turbo was built to spool faster.

No problem. I'd make sure you have enough fuel first. Other things to look at are how much does it smoke when you are trying to get it to lite? Boost leak? Try making a boost leak detector. You can search for it on here. There are a few write-ups about it. What kind of intake? Time to clean/change the filter?

I had a cheap HX40 on both my trucks and it spooled very quick. Obviously you have a problem, but with the number of things that might be causing it; you have to narrow them down. The first place I would start is fuel because lack of fuel psi will kill your injection pump, which is a costly fix.

A 66 is a big single in my book. You need more fuel (larger injectors) to spool, also heat spools. May want to try a turbo blanket. They are fairly cheap and can help with spool.

Have you checked for boost leaks?

I have a brute force intake with new filter along with a different intake horn. I have not checked for boost leaks but have read through the diy write ups about it. i was told with the race trim and batmo the 66 would spool fast. I had smaller injectors so figured the slow spool was because lack of fuel. So I changed the plate to a 10 from nothing, tuned the afc,60lbs springs and 4gsk along with the injectors. Noticed a little bit better spool but still slow smokey and egts havent gotten any cooler. Nervous about my egts with bigger injectors. I do not drive the truck more than once a month but egts will hit 1400 easy. I will check for boost leaks after i make the diy tool.

I'd say boost leak. It is well worth it to grab the upgraded I/C boot kit. I got mine from Diesel Auto Power for less than $200. That is most likely where your boost leak is coming from. I think you would hear the leak though so maybe I am wrong. Every time I had a big leak; I could hear it. The turbo is good right? I remember reading somewhere the batmo wheels have reliability issues. With a lot of smoke; you are probably getting enough fuel, but I'd put a gauge on just to be sure and to protect your p-pump.

I got my injectors from DAP pretty happy so i will check out the IC boots. I will check for a boost leak tomorrow afteri make the guage. As for hearing the leak i cant hear anything in the cab but the turbo and stack. Before i check for a boost leak i will pop the hood and give it a listen. Assuming i am listening for a hissing sound? Turbo is good has been on for 6 months and about 200 miles. Dang havent heard that about the batmo just read they spool fast. Maybe just mine is the not fast spooling one haha.

I seriously doubt you hear a boost leak with out creating any boost.... I would just build the boost leak tester and do it that way. :c:

Every time I'm going up a hill hauling and pop a boot; I can hear the air rushing over the sound of my motor. Tons of black some and the EGT's skyrocket. It is not fun going up a hill slower than the truckers...
