05 Cummins with 03 long real Smokey?

Hi everyone new here first post. I have an r 05 quad cab that I bought with a locked up engine so I bought an engine out of an 03 and replaced rings bearings seals and gaskets. I used the injectors and fuel system and all electrical system from the 05 but the turbo is off of the 03 and it runs great but its real Smokey black smoke even under light throttle. Would having a little less boost with the 03 turbo cause it to smoke that bad? It starts easy and idles clean no check engine lights or anything. Thanks

the pistons in the 03 engine are different from the pistons that were in your 05 engine...the problem you have is that your injectors are the wrong spray pattern for the pistons that are in the engine....the least expensive way to fix it will be with new nozzles that are for an 03, the other option.....change the pistons

Thanks for the reply I still have the 03 injectors but I don't remember the pistons looking any different maybe its just a small difference? I'm not sure what condition the 03 injectors are in but do u think its worth putting the 03 nozzles on the 05 injectors?

Yes i would swap nozzles....they changed pistons when they went to the 325hp engine

Thanks a lot I will try that. By the way the reason the 05 engine locked up is because the passenger side motor mount bolt came out and the previous owner continued to drive it ca
using the cross member to crush the oil pan and pick up tube. So watch your motor mounts.

I vote you've got a bad injector that was most likely the cause of the previous engine failure.

what mysterync said is very possible also, i took for granted that during the rebuild the injectors were tested since that is our standard procedure

My last post explained why the engine failed number 3 and 4 rods were siezed to the crank I tore it down myself the burn pattern on the pistons were pretty consistent the truck now starts easily idled great no white smoke just smokes excessively under throttle I bought the 03 engine for 1200 and tore it down and it looked good I replaced the rings bearings and seals. I wish I would have checked the nozzles to see what they were I was thinking maybe the last owner had bigger nozzles put in it, but maybe not how much does it cost to have them checked?

Around $30 each

Well I put the 03 nozzles on and it doesn't smoke anymore but it seems a little lean just off idle under load and its louder maybe a little rough at idle also any suggestions?
