Weak points for cr Dodge

Last summer I too got a common rail 2004.5 but before purchase I wondered the same. What I found suggested the main problem was injectors failing, sometimes resulting in washing down cylinders, leading to serious lubrication catastrophic circumstances. The problem seems to be relatively uncommon but does happen. These double and triple injectors are sensative to dirt therefore good filtration is essential. The oem filters down to 7 microns, I believe, and many have added aftermarket fuel filters down to 2 microns. My Fass has a 3 micron filter. It seems that with clean fuel they are pretty reliable engines. I'm sure others will chime in with more but that's what I found.

You should upgrade your lift pump on that truck also they didn't upgrade to the good intank pump until 04.5. I would stick to running an edge jwa or a smarty they are a far better tuner for that truck imho.:c:

I recently had some engine/fuel issues with my 03 that turned out to be loose crossover tubes... I am at 207k, the issues were leading me and others to injectors being the problem, so if you ever end up with the truck not starting or hard starting especially when warm then re-torque your crossover tubes to 37ft.lb before you go into it any deeper. (The tubes connect the fuel lines to the injectors through the head) Quite a simple and cheaper fix that would end up getting fixed in the process of replacing injectors and you would never know if the problem was just the loose tubes.

ive had the worst luck with the front end in my 05. tie rods, ball joints, u joints. as far as the tuner you go with... i am runnin a quad right now and like it much better than when i had my smarty. the smarty is much more expensive and there was so dang much to tune on it. if you got the time to mess with it then go ahead though.
