Exhaust smell

why do 03 cummins exhaust smell so weird? like i feel that it should smell like burnt diesel, like how a tractor or a 6 liter ford does. theres nothing wrong with my truck, its done it its whole life, but its just a weird smell. any one know what im talking about?

The change in smell IMO is due to the high pressure at which the diesel is injected into the cylinder. Which in turn improves combustion thus giving a change in smell. That is my thoughts any way. :pca1:

Hell I could just be making stuff up....:tttt:

Ummmm, the only thing i can think of is higher efficiency of burning diesel. but then again i have no clue

But you are right it does have a different smell. :c:

My 03 Cali with a Cat had a weird smell until the Kitty disappeared into the attic? Any chance yours is a Cali truck?

I can't speak for his truck.

But I have noticed anything 03 and above has a different smell to it.

Thought I was answering to the OP, my first post here and I am old. To answer to the op do I need to click on the Quick Reply on the OP's post and not use the Quick Reply at the bottom of the thread? Thanks

No you did answer the OP I was just replying to what you were saying. I just meant I can't say whether or not his was a California edition or not. I just know that from 03 and up they smell different.:tu:

no its not a cali edition. its the high output

Almost smells like propane being burnt, ever smelled a Schwanns truck? That's what I've associated it with. I too have theorized bc of the increased injection efficiency and possible timing for the weird smell. I don't find it unpleasant, it's just not what you'd associate with diesel exhaust.
