Truck needs ether to start?

Ok so I currently have a 12v and I'm thinking about selling and getting a 3rd gen. I found a good price on one but the guy said u have to hit it with a shot of ether to get it to start after it sits for a couple hrs? But once u get it started he says it runs like a champ. Any info on what would cause this would be highly appreciated. Thanks

prob. injectors

Those trucks can get "addicted" to ether........be careful......with the grid heaters activated you could cause a big boom.

So do u all think I should jus walk away from this truck before I jus get myself into a problem? Can't afford to be fixin something every weekend.

walk away man using ether multiple times is bad news for engine and the user. just keep looking not worth it :argh:

stroke out

Even for 8k? Qclb, 4x4 built auto 200xxx?

DieselConstruction 01-26-2012 09:10 PM

it just dangerous to be risking your money for sure you have to work on injectors and who nows how long hes been firing it on ether and whether he would give you a honest answer just my .02 good luck with your decision though

Thanks for your help I think I'm gonna walk away from it

you'll end up doing injectors and probably more, not worth it in the long run IMHO.

Your problem sound like fuel presure. once the truck is running fuel pressure has been built. after it sets for some time the presure bleeds off and the engine has to cranck it"s ass off to build enough fuel presure to start. Using ether just speeds this process. The truck is sucking air from some place..Hope this will help ya.....

could be at the transfer pump mine was at the electrical conection were its rivitted to the top of pump thats were the air leak was

wildbill 01-29-2012 05:39 PM

It's either a low pressure fuel leak (lift pump to the injection pump) or a high pressure leak (injection pump to the rail, #4 injector line is leaking, pressure relief valve, connecting tubes to the injectors, or injectors themselves). I'm gonna guess, that the connecting tubes need to be re-torqued.

What did you end up doing?

I bought an 03 for 8k as a donor truck for another project. the motor ran fine when i bought it. had to replace the front axle and luckily found one for $150! sold the junk one for that!
5th gear makes noise and now I trying to figure out whats with the motor. see my post (03 cummins idles high wont start hot) if anybody wants to read the problem.
Unless you like wrenching and are well educated in CR's, walk away.
I personally dont like the thought of the ether because you dont know how much its been used.
Anyways patience is a virtue and you get what you pay for...:tu:
