Rear Pinion Seal Leak
 

I changed my oil about a week ago and noticed that the rear diff has oil on it. Thinking that its the pinion seal. I called a local dealer about a price for the seal and replacement labor on something like that. Haven't really working on newer vehicles very much and he said if it's just the seal I would looking around 250-300, but if it's the seal and the bearings it's closer to 1000. Does this sound about right, I would do it my self but have never done a pinion seal and bearings before and we don't have the greatest auto shop on the base I'm stationed at.

Seal is easy! One big nut pull the ujoint holder off and replace the seal! bearings don't go bad on these! It's either good or blown up!

Figured it was just a seal since its not making any sort of noise just loosing fluid.

I know this is on a chevy but it is the same process for a dodge fairly simple process.

Don't be surprised if the new seal leaks...most often if they leak, the pinion flange is faulty too.

I replaced mine three times and finally left the last one leak...it quit leaking on its own and hasn't leaked a drop in almost 100k. The general consensus was that the sealing surface on the pinion flange had worn and the new seal finally cut a new sealing surface into it. My new move, had the leak not stopped on its own, was to replace the pinion flange.

Is this something a specialty shop or a transmission shop will work on?
