2003 Ram 2500 Should I buy???

Hello to all I am new to the forum and I am looking to get advice, I am in the market of buying a Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L, quad cab or mega cab. I want to find one that has been modified already to save me some money in buying aftermarket stuff down the road.

I found a 2003 Quad Cab, with the 5.9L AT, 155,000miles it has several mods done to it here are the highlights, ATS lift, 35 inch tires,Boost guages BANKS TECHNI-COOLER INTERCOOLER,BANKS SIX GUN DIESEL TUNER, BANKS MONSTER RAM AND BANKS EXHAUST, ATS rear diff cover.
for $24,000. Its very clean and allot of cosmetic upgrades.

So my questions are as follows:
1) I've never owned a diesel so what signs should I look out for.
2) is there any major issues with this year model
3) Anyone know with that set up what approx MPG would be.
4) Any other advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated

sounds like the current owner spent a pretty penny, first off id find out about the tranny, if its stock or not or weather or not its been rebuilt,

abp5 07-29-2011 08:07 PM

its been rebuilt approx 50k ago

yes ask about tranny. ask about the front end to like tie rod ends and such. ask about lift pump to these have the old lift pump that like to go bad. i would buy a stock truck if i were you because some of these guy beat the he!! out of them like sled pulling. i would buy a stick shift to because if you buy an auto with over 100000 miles on it the trany will need to be replace soon because alot of people don't change the oil in them.

Not sure bout the rest since the truck is at a dealer and they got the truck as is. Just that the trans has been rebuilt.

price seems high to me for what it is i bought a 2006 4x4 auto loaded has a sunroof and everything the only thing it doesnt have is factory nav but it had 130k on it and i got it for 17900 so shop around yes it has the mods but its an 03 with 155k on it so think about it is all i am saying

17k that sounds like a Good deal.....That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for weather or not it's a good deal and what kind of things I need to check before buying a diesel

Sounds like the guy put the big banks kit on it, good setup just the tuner isnt worth a damn(according to alot of people). but its all about the tranny. test drive it set it on the max setting and hammer it. see if she slips!!!! Those dealers like to jack the price on those modified trucks. if you can buy a stock truck. i got my 04 with the lift and tires is all the previous guy did to it under 100k(well 99 some change) for 18,900. and its only 2-3k to make it a hill billy bad ass truck. just my input. and try to go 6spd. P.S. ask about the injectors. thats a good 1500 in repairs. and expect 19-21mpg

Azdiesel 07-29-2011 11:33 PM

That price is too high for that many miles. I bought an 2006 with 78 k for $20 K. Last year. Keep shopping. :humm:

The dealer doesn't know about the injector history, so where u guys finding theses deals on trucks craigslist, dealerships ?

Bigred7.3 07-30-2011 01:56 AM

i got my 2005 3500 dually 4x4 4door slt for 12,900 the body is in perfect shape, it does have 170k but the trannys been redone and the original owner had it regulary survaced at the dodge dealership that he bought it from brand new(paperwork to prove it) he even took it to dodge to get the wipers replaced and the tires changed.

cummins army 07-30-2011 02:54 AM

found mine at the dodge dealer i saw it the day after they got it in and the truck was so dirty and nasty full of trash that the sales man (who i have used before ended up buying 3 vehicles from him in 1 yr) didnt want me to test drive it look at it or anything hell he didnt even know he had it on the lot they where asking 19900 for it and i saw the receipt for the trans build that was done 800 miles prior to me sitting in the truck so shop around the deals are out there

abp5 07-30-2011 09:00 AM

Is there anything specifically that I need to be looking our for other than trans history and injectors, when it comes to diesels?

BLACKSMOKEMOAN 08-01-2011 11:49 AM

I just bought on 03 QCLB 4x4 5spd with 190k for $8500 that is in great condition. I was looking at another truck identical to it but automatic for $10k that had 200k miles on it until i found this one. Ive never owned an auto cummins but worked on and driven plenty and will tell you it really kills a nice truck. It pretty much has to be fully built to make the truck the way it should be.

abp5 08-01-2011 07:14 PM

You talking about the auto trans kills the truck? If so how come?

cumminspwrram59 08-01-2011 09:30 PM

you would have to drive a stick cummins to understand what he is talkin bout there. they are a blast to drive.

basically ask about the front end on it if anything has been done there and like said above injectors and the tranny. that sounds like alot for an 03. i got my 05 reg. cab 6 speed with 200K on it for 9grand. gotta keep checkin around dont jump on the first one you find

abp5 08-03-2011 09:56 PM

Thanks guys I will just keep looking for the right one

Colonelkiller88 08-04-2011 01:35 AM

I just bought my 05 qcsb with 46000 miles for 23500 from a private seller. The truck came with some mods but very very clean. That price sounds high I would keep looking and try to avoid dealers.

skinnysfd 08-06-2011 08:58 PM

sounds extremely high my 03 2500 qclb with 130k on it auto trans i got for 13k and i even got the dealer to pay for injectors and front end components. Main thing that would scare me on that truck is the banks kit. i bought an 05 from a dealer that had that stuff on it and within 2 months she went boom. im not a fan of the banks stuff and if you do some searching on here you will find alot of people arent. Keep shopping around theres always good deals out there even try the classifieds on this site usually alot of good trucks on here and the good thing is you get to talk to previous owner and you can do searches to see if anything went really wrong with em.i would shop around more.Honestly the best thing to do would be to buy one thats not programmed,etc.. get yourself a stock one and then do the stuff you want to it yourself

abp5 08-06-2011 10:54 PM

Thanks great input I didn't realize some the stuff bout banks
