Battery go boom!...

Has anyone else's battery ever explode? Well mine just did. Popped the hood and top was off the battery and a mess was everywhere. Even took off some of the paint next to the top of the hood. DAMN

Need to get some basic fluid STAT to keep the Sulfuric acid from eatin away every thing under there:scare2:

dalton06 07-25-2011 05:02 PM

What's basic fluid?

Benjamin 07-25-2011 05:07 PM

you can use baking soda, it will neutralize the acid. if you mix an acid, and a base it will neutralize each other. baking soda is cheap and effective, you can throw it on as a powder and it will stick to the acid, then mix up a baking soda and water solution to spray on and wash it all away.

do you have any pictures of the battery?

dalton06 07-25-2011 05:23 PM

Na I didn't think to get one til after too battery away. Caps was off the top and it swelled up on sided. Thanks for your help.

Battery go boom!...

Did it just pop the caps on the battery? Mine did the same thing awhile back

dalton06 07-25-2011 05:32 PM

Popped caps, expanded and sprayed everywhere. :argh::argh::ouch:

Battery go boom!...

Yup mine did the same thing. Did you see a spike on your gauge prior to the caps blowing ?

dalton06 07-25-2011 06:42 PM

Just noticed batt volts down a bit. That only thing I noticed.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

What's yalls voltage at when cranked. Lil under 14? I can't remember what's normal.

turbostang7 07-25-2011 08:13 PM

i had one explode on a piece of machinery i was working on. i was leaning over it just before it went leaned back and hit the key to see if it would crank yet and "boom" had to take a baking soda bath lol. not too fun. i have pics of the battery somewhere if i find them i will post them up for ya.
usually happens when the battery is about to die. the hydrogen gas builds up during charging and discharging and if the connection is a little weak it could spark and make a huge mess lol.

Battery go boom!...

Mine climbed to around 18 and set cel off then all of a sudden it went back to normally and about a week later went to jump a lawn mower off and noticed them missing. Load test the battery and it was better than the other one that didn't blow. Also I kinda find it wierd both mine and his were the passenger side batteries. Also mine were bought new first of April

dalton06 07-25-2011 08:44 PM

I had replaced the Other one bout month ago. It went out week after my water pump went to crap. So it was the stock one that's been there since 06. The original battery terminal had cracked so I had to get another crappy connection that you stick the huge wire in and then clamp it down. It's a crappy way. I think that end the positive one slid out and maybe it just over done the battery then it really blew. Idk. I'm just hoping everything is ok. The voltage went couple past 14 now so I guess it charged up some now. Thanks for yalls help. :c:

i had 2 blow up on me. them dang things can be dangerous. glad you didnt get hurt

dangerous1965 07-25-2011 10:55 PM

If they are maintenance free can't check them but if they are regular batteries good idea to check the water once in a while when they dry out fumes happen and it may spark and BOOM! A bad connection will have the alt charge just one battery and cause an over charge so battery maint. is very important! Clean all the posts every couple of months at least! you can buy the melt in terminals and torch the ends into molten solder works great and really easy to do!
