06 Ram A/C Compressor

After sweating my u know whats off yesterday during a 3 hour drive in 90 degree weather, I figured I had better take a look at the A/C on my 06 mega cab. I'm no A/C guy, but I cant hear the compressor clutch engage and the front of it isn't spinning when running, so it doesn't appear to be locking up when you turn it on. I checked the power to it, and there is power there all the time, even when the key is off. I can't figure that one out. Also, I took a little pressure off the belt, to see if i could turn the pump. The pulley turns free, but I cant turn the center. I don't know how hard they are to turn though.
Any advice would be great, because its still damn hot out!!
Thanks
Scott

Did you do the simple things first? Check freon level? Add a can to see if it's just low? Some cans come with a dummy guage Just hook it up and see if it's in the green zone!

I bought a kit, and checked the pressure first assuming that was the problem before I noticed the compressor clutch wasn't engaging.

Thanks

I think you have spun your clutch in your a/c compressor. You should be able to turn the compressor by hand. Not freely like an alternator, but by hand for sure. If you loosen/remove the belt, turn the key to run, turn A/C on and listen/look of the click, you should be able to turn the pulley, and compressor shaft as well.

It seems like its locked up. I pulled down on the tensioner and tried to turn the compressor and the only thing that turns is the pulley. Can you explain why there would be power going to the clutch all the time?
It's not noisy as if its bound up or dragging, and you can't hear it clicking when you turn the power switch on or off. I guess I'll just have to pull it off and look at it closer.
It's been one problem after another with this 06 Dodge. My 03 Ram never gave me any problems, which is the only reason I didn't go FORD this time!!

If a relay is stuck closed, that would cause the problem. If you cant hear the clicking, and you should be able to, then the coil in the compressor clutch may be failed.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take the compressor off soon as I can get a chance and check it out or at least take the belt off to check.
