Valve adjustment?
I'm getting ready to adjust my valves and was wondering if the valve cover gasket is reusable since it has all the wires and crap thanks in it for the injectors.

yes it is reusable

The valve cover gasket is a single piece, and as noted reusable...the rocker box gasket has all the wires your referring to...you should not need to disassemble the rocker box unless its leaking. |
Ok so I can take it all off as one peice and the gasket is reusable, thanks for the info !! :tu:

Why are you adjusting the valves? Already have a 100k on that truck! WOW!!
|
Yup, just got 100k miles so I figured better do it to stay on top of the maintenance so it last several 100 thousand more !!
|
pretty easy to do IF you know how! That's alot of miles! What have you done to it? 2 micron filter?

So do my valves need adjusted on my 2005 cummins? It keeps makin this knock time sound at random times puffs a little smoke and then it purrs like a kitten and i cant figure it out. It doesn do it goin down the highway and it doesn do it all the time. I put power service injector cleaner in it the other day and it boost the cetain levels and its been really hot didn think about that lol. Could that be my problem?

well it still runs like a champ and will pull anything i need it too well this will give me something to do when i get back from deployment

My truck is bone stock and I have used fleetgaurd or mopar fuel filters ever other oil change which are about 5k miles. I'm pretty easy on the truck mostley unloaded to and from work and maybe about 2k miles a year pullin my toyhauler to the dunes or camping. Doing the valves will be easy, I have always done all my own work, just wanted to make sure I had all my stuff together before I started. Nothing worse then getting halfway through a job only to realize you don't have the stuff to finish :scare2:
|
Maybe I'm missing something (highly likely), but my factory service manual states that the valves don't need to be adjusted unless a procedure has been performed that impacted the valve/rocker assembly:
The 24–valve overhead system is a “low-maintenance” design. Routine adjustments are no longer necessary, however, measurement should still take place when troubleshooting performance problems, or upon completion of a repair that includes removal and installation of the valve train components or injectors. Can someone clear this up for me? I'm at 122,000 now. |
If you check them, they will need adjusted...they don't do a good job at the factory....
|
Ok, that makes sense. I will probably need to get on mine then. Thanks for clarifying!
|
the valve cover and rocker box assembly are 2 different pieces the rocker box is bolted to the head and the valve cover is bolted to the rocker box there really is no need to take the rocker box off but both gaskets are reusable.

how much does it cost to have this done or is it easy to do

Shims or lock nuts???
Before I tear into mine. Are they the typical adjustable screw and lock nut or the stupid shims or pucks? Just wanna make sure since I dont have the manual. Thanks.

Screws...the only tools needed are those to remove the valve cover, a barring tool to turn the engine over, a set of feeler gauges, and the hex wrench and allen wrench to do the actual adjustment. Its not a bad job, just takes patience. There are a lot of good write ups on the forums on how to do it at home. |
You don't even need a barring tool. The engine can be turned with the alternator pulley.
|
Except that you turn the engine the wrong direction, and that it is considered the incorrect way to set the valves.

And I don't mean some butthead on a web forum, either. A link or reference to service manual of some sort from a reputable source. Otherwise, like I said: Bullshit. |
Show me where it states to use the alternator and not the barring tool? The manual states barring tool...

The engine goes round 'n round, where it stops nobody knows. Makes exactly NO DIFFERENCE how it goes around or which direction as long as you know what you are doing. That seems to be the challenging part sometimes now, don't it - knowing what you are doing? :nope: Apparently my truck's been running great for years with the valves set incorrectly. :w2: |
Please correct me if I'm wrong but checked my valves at 100k and bout to roll 200k and do it again but these are the specs I went by per cummins. The intake valves are set to .010" and the exhaust valves are set to .020". The manual states that if the intake valves are between .006" and .015" that they are within spec and don't require adjustment. The exhaust valves don't require adjustment if they are between .015" and .030".
|
Thats sounds right. But since you are checking them anyway, might as well set them back to factory spec. :tu:
