What programmer do I need?

I do alot of hauling with a 32 ft gooseneck. I'm not into hot rodding but I'm looking for a lil more hp. Had a bully dog and liked it but went thru 2 motors. Was always on towing mode. Can't say the programmer was the cause but took it out anyway and sold it. What programmer would be the best for just towing

A smarty has alot of options! Or you can go EFI live!!

Red_Rattler 04-08-2011 07:10 PM

Simple quick reliable power and gauges. Edge juice with attitude

Thanks. I have a buddy who has a smarty in his dodge and really likes it. Which one has the best safety features?

Red_Rattler 04-09-2011 12:30 AM

Edge, I love my smarty as well but for safty theres none :D It relies apon your foot and your better judgement to let off where the edge has turbo cool down, warnings and the chip wont activate until the truck is to operating temps as well

What about the banks programmers?

dieseldean 04-09-2011 11:54 PM

Banks is cutting edge. Great stuff, but very pricey. Edge raises rail pressures, and in my humble opinion, shortens the life of your injectors. Smarty performs well, and I haven't heard many complaints regarding their product. I'd go with the smarty. When I had issues with my Edge e-z, their "fix" was to try to sell me another module. Personally, I won't spend another dime on any Edge product... Cummins does offer upgrades-that are covered by warranty...just a thought.

Red_Rattler 04-09-2011 11:59 PM

lol My Smarty raises pressure as well, to the tune of 27500 psi... No issues, the truck has seen that kind of rail psi since 25k and now I have 125k on it...

I love my smarty! I got the POD. Its good stuff man as stated it has no real guages or safegurads however it works well and at 60hp increase it does good on temps. I think you can get the smarty jr and you will be happy with that. for around the same price as a smarty jr you can get a TS MP8. It works well and is a comman stack with a tuner. its also simple with a dial to rais or increase the power. Dont over look DR Performance either they have some nice stuff that may fit your bill. I will probably get an MP8 and stack that with my smarty.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the info. It's been a big help in picking which one to go with

skinnysfd 04-11-2011 01:57 PM

I had banks, edge, and smarty jr. DO NOT go with banks they are junk imho!!! my 05 melted down a piston due to the banks, my edge was awesome but when towing i noticed some high egt's but the gauges were nice, i now run a smarty and have never had problem yet and i tow everyday and its always a pretty good load. My vote goes for the smarty jr its good power and fairly safe for what u describe you are going to be doing

Pete379x 04-11-2011 02:10 PM

The smarty is what I plan on getting as soon as I get all the ball joints and u joints replaced in the frontend. Thanks for the advice on the banks.

skinnysfd 04-11-2011 02:23 PM

No problem. i just had some really bad experiences with the banks junk and for the power gains they claim" on paper" and all their expensive ads imho i didnt really noticed much of a gain with it on and i also heard that it raises rail pressure really high so thats why i was haveing so many problems and then eventually meltdown. But i had the jr on my 06 ( 176,000)and my dads 04.5 ( 186,000 on it) and 06 ( 163,000 on it)both have it and we have been problem free for the most part( knock on wood)

Thanks for the info. It's been alot of help

Should I use gauges with the smarty and have you seen any improvements in mpg's with it

skinnysfd 04-11-2011 08:15 PM

i always think an egt gauge is a must and if you have an auto its nice to get one of those too. With my jr i saw about 1.5 increase if i was really good to her.

Pete379x 04-11-2011 10:12 PM

My truck has a stick but I will probably look into egt and boost gauges when I get the smarty
