when should injectors be changed?
 

i have an 03 common rail and was talking to an injector place and they were telling me to change my injectors in the truck. it have 342k km on it or 212382 miles on it should i be doing them. the truck is running fine but they were saying that if they give out i will melt pistons.

I would think if the injectors are not showing any signs of needing replaced then don't waste the money. Just my .02

It is rare that an injector will hang open and melt your piston. Mine just went and the truck just show down three cylinders due to their being a bad injector. I agree it makes sense to replace all of them if one goes because shops want $500+ for just one injector and I found a set of performance re-manufactured ones for ~$1400.

Uh huh, and pigs will fly. LOL! Frequently, that is the first thing that happens because you can't tell running down the road it is over fueling.

Your on the border line if your only running stock filtration. A lot just depends on how good the majority of the fuel you have been running really is. Its so hit or miss there is no rule. Some can loose injectors in 40-60k while others will go over 300k with no problems. We do know that with 2 micron filtration and no other issues they will easily go over 400k without issues.

If you want to choose whne and where to swap the injectors do it now. While your at it upgrade the LP and add a 2 micron filter between the OE filter housing and the CP-3. That is the ONLY way to be sure. :)

Cerberus hit all the bases! With that many miles it's better if you pick the time and place! It may run fine but your return rate is off the chart. they are at the end of their life! What mods do you intend on doing? Don't go over 50hp sticks if you are MPG minded.

You never saw a police helicopter? The local diesel shop told me it’s rare and they have been working on diesels for over 40 years. I just did a quick search and you get nine results for melted piston and 63 for injector problem. I’d call that rare…

Lessee 9 to 63 is a 14% ratio. I would say that is hardly rare.

Now take those 63 instances of injector problems and it is a good bet 30% of them have some piston damage. The unfortunate truth is it is not rare at all.

While 40 years of experience is impressive the CR's have only been around 7 years and those are the ones that are particular about things. Lots of shops still are not up to speed on the CR's because they do not conform to logic. They have their own peculiarities that are learned thru a lot of experience.

Melting pistons on stock 1st and 2nd gens was a rare occurence, not on the 3rd gens. ;)

How does one achieve 2 micron filtration? Do you need a whole fuel system or just a really good aftermarket filter?
