Fuel Knock and sputtering
I have an 06 common rail and i put a ts performance mp-8 box on it today, it ran fine for a minute or two and went all to hell all of a sudden, it dies occasionally, sputters and fuel knocks like hell...it threw a fuel delivery error code and i cleared it and disconected the terminals and it hasnt changed at all...this is all after removing the mp-8, any answers as to what im facing or any similar experiences?
Bad lift pump possibly... The only thing that makes me think this is not it is that the 06 has the auxillery pump, not the earlier style. Did you have your tuner turned all the way up? And how many miles are on your truck? It could have been slowly going out and the extra volume needed by the programmer was the straw that broke the camels back.
it has 90,000 on it and its an on the fly box so i was rollin it up and down, my buddy is a diesel mechanic and he cant seem to figure it out...i dunno, hopefully it is the lift pump...i was gonna invest in a airdog anyway.
put a fuel pressure gauge on the front of your fuel filter housing and it should read something like 5 psi with that type of lift pump. even if it reads lower your not terrible, but if it's at 0 then you know you have a bad lift pump. If you do dont run it any more to save your injection pump.
I have a better way, just open the filter and break the suction, that will tell you when it won't start back up, I had to force the service guy at Dodge to do it when he said my lift pump was great, and told him it was out when I went in, but then they turned downed my warranty and I said throw the tank in the bed I will pick the truck up and I put a Air Dog on it, they wanted 600 for the POS stock lift pump, plus labor.
have you checked the plug on the FCA?...and the rail pressure sensor plug?....sounds to me like what happens when you start one with the FCA unpluged to do a full rail pressure test....also could be the FCA stuck at wide open....take it off and swap it with a buddys just to check it out
