Exhaust ???

straight piping a 2006 cummins, bad or good idea? chopped off right before the muffler the cat is still there, would this cause fuel economy to drop about 2-2.5 mpg?

Farmboy 2.0 08-30-2010 06:21 PM

Straight piping the truck should not cause the truck to loose fuel mileage.

CreeperSleeper 08-30-2010 06:58 PM

What Scott said... If anything it will help it. (Not much but it should in theory.)

Mud Patrol 08-30-2010 10:55 PM

thats what i thought, the only other thing I did before my mpg's kicked shits was put a container of prestone diesel additive to the tank when i filled up, guess best thing to do now is to go through its current fuel and never use prestone again? unless anyone else out there has any idea what went wrong?

00CamaroSS 08-31-2010 12:12 AM

I straight piped my truck about 2 weeks ago. My fuel milage dropped about the same as yours. Now its about .3-.5 MPG higher than with factory exhaust.

Was the drop caused by cutting the exhaust off or was it bad fuel? I don't know but it seems it worked its self out now.

Farmboy 2.0 08-31-2010 12:27 AM

Run that tank out. Try an RBP, Stanadyne, or Power service additives. Also how heavy are you in the skinny pedal? Cuz thats a factor to. Not trying to sound like a dick

00CamaroSS 08-31-2010 02:07 AM

I agree with scott, I don't run any additives though and I'm very light on my pedal. (I like fuel mileage)

Scott why would both of our trucks loose fuel milage after straight piping it? Could it be possible that the computer isn't used to having less restriction and has to learn new settings?

Mud Patrol 08-31-2010 06:31 AM

I do keep my foot out of her, most of the time at least. I will run this tank out and try you suggestion scott.

My guess is that after you cut the pipes off and or
Deleted the muffler you were probably enkoying the new sound so much that you were unconciously pushing a little harder on the skinny pedal. But once you get used to it you naturally go back to your normal driving style.

Yep i went through that when i first bought my truck.

I'd buy a turbo back exhaust system if i were you though

My vote here is that you guys were harder on the 'go' pedal than normal. It is just normal to want to hear that new found sound!! If you can stop listening for it and drive like you did before, your fuel mileage should return. If it doesn't, then I would look for something wrong. Oh, and a 5.9L doesn't have any way of 'knowing' if the exhaust pipe is there or not. So it wasn't the computer messing with your mileage either. 'Straightening' up the exhaust flow will help with mileage; but it is a small amount. Most of us won't even notice the small .1 or .2 mpg improvement. Hopefully you will see a drop in EGTs though.
I don't think I ever posted pics of my 'selectable' muffler, did I? I might have to do that. . .:jump:

I want to see pics of the selectable muffler.

i just did mine with no probs added a triple dog a few days later and lost about 1mpg but iv been leanin on her a little bit

TKC2000 09-06-2010 11:21 PM

I have the stock piping with a muffler delete and the cat is gutted but still in place, so basically straight piped...it's damn loud, especially when it's floored...didn't notice a change in mpg's....but really noticed the looks from people unfortunate enough to be on my exhaust side....windows go up quick...

Diesel Dawgs Performance 09-06-2010 11:30 PM

Its probably due to the face that your truck now sounds badass and you give it more throttle due to the sweet sound of the all mighty Cummins. :rocking:
