Saveable Block

OK so I lost a cylinder due to a bad injector. It melted the piston and the exhuast valve. I honed out the cylinder and removed all the aluminum build up.
Now I have three scores that i can barely catch a nail on. Can I get a couple opinions on this as far as life, blowby, resealing in time and saveable??:argh:

May be a bore and new pistons nothing crazy on the bore.MAHLE pistons my guess is as good as yours.:choochoo:

GhostRider3149 03-24-2010 06:11 PM

Damn, sorry to hear this about my truck's twin! Hopefully some other guys have some good input on this..i have no clue either. Anyways good luck Andy

dangerous1965 03-24-2010 10:08 PM

Thanks John, I dodn't think sleeves where an option if they where this engine would be the best ever!!! I work on tractor trailer rigs and when they drop a valve and destroy a cylinder I just pop out the sleeve and put in a new one and piston and head and they are off again for another million miles! I honed it down to two scratches maybe .010 deep can't grab it with a finger nail but you can see it! Due to money constraints I'm gonna have to run it and see how bad the blowby is. Call it an experiment in cummins resiliency!

cerberus60 03-25-2010 10:29 AM

Both sleeves and oversize pistons are an option on the ISB. Just depends on how bad the damage is and how far you want to push the performance.

If you can get a good hone cross hatch run it with the grooves and see what happens. You might be surprised how well it will work. :)

dangerous1965 03-25-2010 09:40 PM

yeah it looks good first I used the dingle balls and then did a cross hatch with the stone hone! Besides the two lines running up and down the cylinder it looks great! I'll keep you all posted on the results! Piston and rings are on the way!

392hemix 03-30-2010 08:58 AM

wow, sounds like you have a nice place to do work on your turck, pretty cool im very interusted in the out come, hope something like this doesnt happen to my truck but im fully aware if you want to play you gotta pay! good luck dude:pca1:

dangerous1965 03-30-2010 10:16 PM

Damn dude if I had a space like in your sig pic I'd be in heaven! tell me where it is and I'll bring the tools!:jump:

392hemix 03-31-2010 07:13 PM

haha that was my old shop i no longer work there! i live in vt and work on power lines, it sux big time, but i get to drive a straight six morooka and go mudding all day....miss the shop tho:dang:

dangerous1965 03-31-2010 10:25 PM

Well at least I have a roof over my truck! Rain is coming! Cylinder looks good but I wish they made a mobile bore to cut it striaght! hand hone is as good as it's gonna get! I'll put the piston in tomorrow!

392hemix 04-01-2010 08:21 PM

good luck, hope it works out for you, what are you building for a back up engine?:w2:

dangerous1965 04-01-2010 09:29 PM

i picked up an 05 with a snapped crank from a hydro lock! :jump:Other than that it's in good shape I just picked up a crank for 400. and am sending it to the machine shop for a little TLC and some secret parts!:w2:
Now if someone would tell me why they make a 50mm head gasket?? is that for cams with extreme lift? Not that I have one:w2:

392hemix 04-01-2010 09:35 PM

haha, dont know for sure? lower compression rato for extram boost? i would be fibbing if i told you i knew, thats super cool tho. talk about a fun project

3 Attachment(s)
OK I got the piston in here are a few pics before Iput it in.That is the score that bothers me! The rod bearing looks great for 140k!!
Now if i only had a pan gasket!Attachment 48112
Attachment 48113
Attachment 48114
Come on gaskets!! Maybe by Tuesday I'll have them!!:jump:

dangerous1965 04-10-2010 10:11 PM

Alright SHE IS ALIVE!!! Started right up and runs smooth! took her down the freeway and POP!! Blew the boot right off the inlet! Must have did something when i pulled the exhaust! Got home and repaired tryed again and wow it's smooth! No blow by I'll put a few hundred on and report!:jump::jump:

cummins.1.5.3.6.2.4 04-11-2010 04:22 PM

badass man glad to hear you got her goin

392hemix 04-11-2010 06:45 PM

very nice, great pictures. hope it works out well! one thing i noticed is the placement of the egt probe. I thought it was better to have it twards the rear of the manifold? i drilled mine in the 5th port? maybe i screwed up, thought that the rear was hotter for some reason?:ouch:

dangerous1965 04-12-2010 10:15 PM

yeah the rear get's hot faster under heavy load I put mine where three would give me the best average. It's strange the probe is right by the cylinder that melted and never did it go above 1000 degrees! makes me wonder what the probe actually reads! So far so good! ran her hard today and still feels good! that's a hundred miles at 70 to 80mph! Purrs like a kitten I think I got lucky!

392hemix 04-13-2010 08:26 PM

Thats great to hear! Glad its running good. Not to hyjack your thread, but what typically do you get for egts? i know you got alot of mods, i can hit 1600 wot@ 110mph, my 97 dodge never hit 1400 on the street and hit 1600 only on the dyno. Just wierd to see it hit 1200-1400 with ease. i only have 4" straight pipe, and cold air intake, with smary on catcher 4 with trq managment and all the safe modes on the light side.:humm:

dangerous1965 04-13-2010 09:46 PM

The third gens burn alot of fuel real hot! 1400 for 10 to 20 seconds isn't going to hurt anything! Before my water injection i would back off at 1350 even though these engines can run at 1200 all day long! With the water injection I'm lucky to pull 1100!! that's at WOT! I think big air in and big air out makes a big difference! The boost with the meth/ water is pretty silly to! 40psi is no problem!

392hemix 04-14-2010 06:38 PM

Wow, lots to learn, going to look into the water meth, but want to upgrade clutch first. Its amazing how addictive these trucks become, first i just wanted a set of gauges and exhaust, now its airdog, clutch water meth....list goes on.. One thing i can say is that my 12valve made lots of power for CHEAP MONEY. but thats ok, its an adventure.:s:

dangerous1965 04-14-2010 06:51 PM

yeah i remember my 12v i modded it for under 400. and was very happy with it! These take thousands and then you break and start all over!:argh: Like you said it's an adventure! So far so good except I'm really going thru the fuel???! 10 gallons with only 170 miles! =17mpg that sucks wonder what is different still mystified by the rail pressure running around 8k haven't figured that out yet! Think it's hooked up wrong but don't know for sure! Anybody know where to hook up the sensor wire? At the sensor or after the MP-8 plug??

392hemix 04-14-2010 07:23 PM

Cant help you there, still learing myself. 17mpg!!!!! Im happy to get 15, what gears do you have? im running 4:10s wish i had 3:54s or something lower. im hopeing with the water meth i will gain some millage. I think i would trade my new truck for a 98.5 12valve with the 5speed. :jump: but then i do like the low miles and tight ride...

thebreeze04 04-15-2010 07:56 AM

Minus the piston, how much did you spend on parts??

dangerous1965 04-15-2010 09:01 AM

Yeah i got the 3.54 gears and 19.5 tires they really help! As far as what it cost I spent
around 300. in parts and fluids and another 50. on a hone then about 15 hrs in my labor.
If you had someone do it I'd guess around 2000.! Glad I'm a mechanic!:jump:
