Black oil
I just got my oil changed about 400miles ago and the oil is already black is this normal. I'm using Rotella.

It's A diesel.... That's what they do.... Nothin to worry bout... Change the oil and idle it five minutes and it will be black.
Rhino. |
It means the oil is doing it's job. By that I mean it's suspending all the soot, like it's designed to do. :tu:
|
^^ hes right ^^
|
Yes sir all of the above :tu:
|
I run a 2 micron polish filter and my oil still turns black quickly, I dont know what micron soot particles are but they are less than 2 micron for sure
|
Get a bypass filter the FS-2500 is the best out there! Do the research on it and then decide if it's worth it.
|
Soot can range from less than 1 micron to 5. The good bypass filters go to about 2 micron, including the 2500 and amsoil's. Soot will still be present but in very small particle size. Gives much longer oil life, but the small stuff will still accumulate over time. Still need to change the oil when that percentage of soot in oil approaches 5%.
The older trucks always used to go several thousand miles while still looking good on the dipstick but these late models are another story. May look concerning, but it's not as described above. It you tested the oil, the percentage soot would still be very low after a few thousand miles. Just have to live with the black. |
yes, my bypass filter is the Amsoil BE100 and I love it, 10% slipstream off the finished side of the OEM filter then back to the sump.....keeps the whole system at 2 micron
Heith you have a PM I need more filters dude |
How much is that Amsoil BE100? and how much are the replacement filters?
|
I can send you some info.

The danger with soot in the oil is when the oil's add pack becomes depleted enough to where it can no longer keep it in suspension. At that point it begins to agglomerate with itself, or stick together into larger pieces that can cause engine damage.
The oil film layer in engine bearings typically runs around 6um - larger than soot. |
