str8 pipein

Well I think Im going to go as loud as I can.

The local NAPA just sold me 8ft of 4" straight pipe and 2 stainless band clamps for $52. I think they screwed up on the pipe cost. anyway not to shabby.

But I had planned on removing on AERO and keeping the other. But I figured I would straight pipe it and see if I liked the sound. if I do than I'll sell the one AERO that I was going to keep. If I liked the sound of the AERO than I can always cut and reinstall.

Im also thinking about going to a 5" tip instead of this 6 incher I have. Im just afraid Im going to catch this big old bow on something. LOL. it sounds awesome but it hangs a little low for me.

I'll have to get my buddy with his viseo recorder to do a little smoking vid. When I get it done.

If ya want totally obnoxious, go with the Aero Turbine 5050. Five inches of wonderfully constant headache. Sounds like a tractor trailer going by.

Why do you plan on taking one of the Aero's out?

GRI 03-20-2007 01:34 PM

Just to see how it sounds. it was 6 dollars for the extra pipe to do it so I figured I would see how it sounds.. and If I dont like it I can always put the one back on.

madhat 03-20-2007 03:06 PM

I love my straight pipe. I took a piece of 5" and crushed it down around the 4". No drone, good sound IMHO...

53 willys 03-20-2007 06:31 PM

that's a good deal for that pipe I will have to call my napa

mobs241 03-20-2007 06:42 PM

thats average for a pipe.. MAKE SURE YOU MEASURE YOUR PIPE BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW PIPE..

mine was 3.5"

GRI 03-20-2007 09:12 PM

I know mine is 4" for sure. this is the 3rd time I have done my exhaust. LOL

53 willys 03-20-2007 09:30 PM

06's are 4"

Yup. And my kitty ran away today... I finally got to see a real black poofie and I LOVED IT!!!

I can't believe I waited so long to, uh, let the cat take it's leave. It made an awesome difference in the sound. I can't keep my foot out of it!!!

njmaier 03-21-2007 12:12 AM

straight pipe....the only way to fly

I'm scared of drone!!!
so I have not done it yet..... maybe the resonator on my mega will stop any drone????

njmaier 03-21-2007 12:34 AM

Well, mine drones like a SOB. I have an 03 so I never had a cat/resonator. My straight pipe dumps right under the truck before the rear axle. It is a tad loud but I like it.

Now, before JMalone had her cat cut off today (that just sounds bad...lots o jokes there), she had just taken out the muffler and left the cat/resonator on. I thought it sounded really good from the outside. There was no drone inside either.

Start out with just cutting off the muffler and replacing it with a straight piece. If you don't like it you can just replace it with a different muffler or the stocker. Any exhaust shop should take care of you for pretty cheap to do that. If you want to really cut down on the drone make sure that your exhaust tip extends out from under the body.

mobs241 03-21-2007 02:14 AM

if you keep the pipe at the rear the drone is not bad at all. in fact you can barely hear it inside the cab.

GRI 03-21-2007 07:32 AM

yeah if you go past the axle and make sure you exit it far enough out from the vehicle.
Ive also heard of people tac welding metal rod to the pipe and getting rid of the drone.

I dont have any drone right now.

I believe 04 and up are 4"

I know for a fact that 04.5s have 4"

I think it's 04.5 and up for a 4" stock. If memory serves the 4" stock started with the 600 series motor.

GRI 03-21-2007 10:28 AM

that very wel can be and would make sense.

another way to identify if you're looking at a 04 or an 04.5

I will say there's a tad bit of drone when I have it floored, but just normal driving at lower RPMs it's fine.

I didn't want the drone and was one reason why I was hesitant about cutting the kitty out. But as stated in other posts, if you have the exhaust exiting outside the bottom of the truck you should be fine.

Hope that helps!!!

magram 03-21-2007 01:50 PM

Man I don't now guys and gals, I straight piped my 97 and at highway speeds the drone was almost enough to make put the factory set up back on.
Just my 2 cents.

GRI 03-21-2007 11:39 PM

I just str8 piped my ride.

all I have to say is. DAMN! I didnt think it was going to be that loud. those AEROs sure do dampen the sound. I didnt get a chance to run it all I did was start it up and check for leaks. But I may be putting the one back in. unless It is quiet in the cab. Tee he.

I couldnt even imagine a straight piped 5" exhaust.

GRI 03-22-2007 07:35 AM

Yeah all I can see is a ticket coming from this one.
Im not even sure if it sounds good or just loud. I think I'l be putting one of my AEROs back on.

but I can tell you what. the turbo spools faster than a MO FO!

Yup, I have noticed that too. Mine's loud, but I love it. Hopefully my truck will just blend in with all the other loud ones around here....

Might be a goooood thing to live in Redneckville!!

GRI 03-22-2007 08:57 AM

The necks dont get any redder than around here. LOL

I will try it for a while and see if I like it.

I dunnnnnoooo.... I'm in Arkansas! :dm:

I listen to my radio loud most of the time, so I don't think much of it. I don't guess anyone's been in the truck with me since the kitty ran away.

GRI 03-22-2007 09:20 AM

OK YOU GOT ME BEAT. LOL

I'll try it out. I just dont think it sounds good. Its loud which is what I like but theres just no sound to it.

GRI 03-22-2007 09:20 AM

but on a good note. there is absoloutly no drone.

JMalone 03-22-2007 09:24 AM

Nope. I could hardly tell any difference in the cab w/ the windows up and doors shut between just the muffler gone and now.

GRI 03-22-2007 09:28 AM

it is actually less drone than when I had the dual AEROs. 1 where the cat was and one where the muffler was.
Thats whay Im a firm believer that the AEROs should be installed in place of the muffler if thats the only thing being run.
I think when the AERO is put in place of the cat it tends to make the DRONE.

JMalone 03-22-2007 09:30 AM

Hmmm.... I haven't thought about that, but it's a possibility. If you decide to go unstraight (lol - there's a joke there, but you know what I mean) you can always try it in the muffler's place. :dm:

GRI 03-22-2007 09:32 AM

thats exactly where the AERO will go.

I wont even make a comment about the unstraighten thing.

JMalone 03-22-2007 09:34 AM

Sorry -- I guess I could have worded it differently, but that wouldn't have been near as fun ;)

GRI 03-22-2007 09:37 AM

true,
Im glad we had this talk. it helped a lot.

good talk. good talk.

The local NAPA just sold me 8ft of 4" straight pipe and 2 stainless band clamps for $52.
Is that for galvanized pipe?

I just bought a 10 foot section of regular galvanized muffler pipe from a Farm Implement Co. for $35.90

Since I lost the Cat and changed mufflers I swear my fuel mileage has gone up a bunch. The overhead has gone from running around 18.5 to 21 and there is a quarter tank left after driving all week. Which is a sweet bonus because I did it for other reasons. (I verified that I am running winter blend)

btw -> I really like the sound of this Nelson muffler but it's not loud. I went with a big straight through muffler so the neighbors can sleep in....lol

CumminsCrazed 03-22-2007 09:33 PM

had mine straight piped few weeks ago, never go back to mufflers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GRI 03-22-2007 10:04 PM

I just got back from the nearest city. holy christ did I scare some people. LOL

it is definatley too loud. The cops around here dont have much to do, so anything loud draws there attention.

I'll put the AERO on. at least it will make it rap a little better if anything else.

Well, that stinks!!! I'm hoping that I can just get by with it. I've got a friend with a 5" straight... He's got by for a couple of years like that.

GRI 03-23-2007 12:13 PM

It wont be too much queiter with the AERO. But it has to be a little more quieter than it is now. LOL

GRI 03-23-2007 11:04 PM

The AERO is back on.

the test run is tomorrow.

GRI 03-24-2007 08:05 AM

much better.
Its still loud but it a nice rap to it.
