Anybody had this happen to them?

Turned my key off and my truck wouldnt turn off. Since the key still kills my lift pump and everything but the gauges and the motor, I just stalled it with the clutch. But, the gauge cluster still has power. Only thing anyone Ive talked to can recomend is an ignition switch. Anyone know of anything else? Im just going to undo the battery tonight and get an ignition in the AM if no one has a better idea.

I've heard that the Rams had bad ignition switches. i haven't owned a Dodge that hasn't had an ignition switch problem. most of my problems are the airconditioning not powering up until you wiggle the key or the abs and check engine lights atay on till you wiggle the key.... i'd check to see if there was a recall on the switch.

I called the dealer. They wouldnt say anything except the schedual an appointment. Im well out of warranty, and they screw up everything they touch, so Ill try it myself. Ive built plenty of motors and transmissions, and made my own wiring harness to swap efi motors into old rigs, so Im think I can handle it. Just asking to see if this is common.

it isn't hard to do, just get the right torx bit and go to town. unbolt it, unplug it, plug the new one in and bolt it back down.

Redneck2 01-18-2010 05:25 PM

Thats what I figured. They arent the security torx are they? The ones that have the pin in the middle. Ive got torx, but only a few security torx.

Benjamin 01-18-2010 05:34 PM

not a security on the ones i have changed.

should be ~ $20-25 from the local parts stores, noone near me stocks it, even the dealer. Rock Auto has them for 21 and 22, there is a sponsor here that does general parts IIRC and might be able to get you one.

you might luck up and find one locally, sometimes our napa has one in stock.

Ok, I'll try auto parts places. Didnt think they would have it. Ive got an autozone hook-up, so if they can get it, I should have one asap. Thanks.

IDK about Rams, but I know in VWs the ing switches will die because of too much weight on the key ring. It will cause the contacts to not be 100% aligned and wears them out. Not sure if this is the case on the Rams but I keep my ign key seperate just in case!

Redneck2 01-18-2010 06:15 PM

I have too damn many keys, but as I understand it, this is a switch behind the lock cylinder that wouldnt be affected very much. And my key is fairly tight, nothing loose and wiggling. I know about the VW's. My mom's Audi has been through 3.

on Rock Auto

Standard Products part number US351 is 20.79

airtex shows 2, one for the 6 speed manual and one for except 6 speed. the 6 speed one is part number 1S7932 and list for 66.79....

i hope you don't have to go with the expensive one....

looks like Autozone list it as 6 speed manual only for this Duralast part number LS1395 for 99.99.....

maybe you can get the hook up on it....
