Lift pump or cp3 failure?
 

Was rollin down the highway on my way home when the CEL came on, truck then started to surge real bad under acceleration. barely made it home. next morning it fired right up and drove like nothing was wrong. couple hours later got the same thing, major power loss, bogging, lots of black smoke. the truck will still fire up and drive just really shitty,truck is parked for now, don't want to damage anything else. these are the codes that were thrown p0148 and p0483 (fuel delivery error) thanks

sounds like you went into the limp mode..................do an airdog on it and see if it straightens out

Where are you located and how is the weather? Any mods to the truck?

Could be something as simple as a plugged collapsed air filter, dirty fuel filter, or a slug of gelling diesel.

"On his way home" suggests it was running normally up to some point, so we can probably assume the fuel heater was doing it's job and the truck was warmed up enough to eliminate the gelling issue. Remember, I said "assume."

"Lots of black smoke" means it's getting fuel, so doubtful the LP is at fault (Sorry Whit).

There's two things it's probably "not." Anybody else want to chime in before I continue guessing?

Lots of places, including the filter, between the tank and fuel heater fuel can gell. Can't assume no gelling issue. ;)

Low rail pressure caused by low supply pressure will give lots of black smoke also. That could also simply be a partially plugged filter, air or fuel, or ????


Your assumptions are no more valid\invalid than Whits or mine due to lack of info. :)


P0148 is generic and is usually accompanied by other DTC's that need a code reader to extract. Those will generally narrow things down. The cooling fan speed is some times a nuisance error, and indication the fan clutch is giving up, or simply cold doing weird things to the electronics.


Either way, internet troubleshooting is sooooo much fun. :jump:

Yes it is, so continuing in that vein, I was going to go ahead and assume (there I go again! :tttt:) the truck is properly maintained with filters and whatnot along those lines. And at that point I'm out of guesses without knowing what the fuel pressure is where.

After that I'd be trying to isolate injectors.

But I'll go out on a limb based simply on probablility, and guess that it's just another commonrail with lunched injector(s). :humm:

Thank you for all your guess and sorry for lack of info (newb). The truck is mostly stock except for air box, intake, and exhaust. also running a bdtd with crazy larry 2.4d on tow/econemy. i do have gauges but no fuel pressure gauge. all fiters have been replaced. i live in south florida so i dont think gelling is the issue. could it be the fca or relief valve? i'm taking to get it looked at in a couple of hours, i'm hopping its the lift pump, i was fixing to upgrade anyway.

excess rail pressure may have lifted the relief valve???

Lift pump, rail relief valve, FCA, inectors will all show symtoms similar to that.
